Job Summary

The Vice President of Music Education will contribute to the organization's overall strategic direction as a senior leadership team member. This position carries comprehensive responsibility across all program areas, requiring visionary music education leadership and meticulous oversight. Initially, the Vice President will immerse themselves in understanding the intricacies of each program, project, and business plan to lead and innovate effectively in three core areas: program leadership, relationships, and program management. The Vice President will continue MacPhail’s commitment to creating equity and inclusion throughout MacPhail programming. This role requires a strategic thinker with a demonstrated understanding of the music education field, exceptional leadership capabilities, and a commitment to advancing the organization’s mission through effective program management.

Responsibilities

  1. Enhance, flesh out, and implement organizational vision as established in MacPhail’s strategic plan
  2. Ensure ongoing programmatic and student experience excellence
  3. Attract, develop, coach, and retain high-performance team members, empowering them to elevate their level of responsibility, the span of control, and performance
  4. Provide leadership in developing inter-team communication and cohesiveness, sustaining culture, and supporting staff during organizational growth
  5. Foster the integration of equity and inclusion practices into program development and delivery and faculty hiring and evaluation practices
  6. Provide oversight for faculty recruitment, hiring, development, and evaluation

Internal and External Relationships

  1. Serve on MacPhail’s Senior Management team, providing updates, insights, and input as needed
  2. Inform and involve the CEO in strategic program conversations
  3. Partner with CFO to evaluate programs for impact on the overall organization's financial health
  4. Collaborate with marketing department to promote new initiatives and support enrollment goals for each program
  5. Partner with Director of Program Operations to ensure effective communications and logistics between departments, administrative functions, and faculty
  6. Collaborate with development team to strategize grant opportunities, fulfill grant obligations and related reporting
  7. Develop and manage relationships with partner organizations, education institutions, and local and national music education organizations

Program Management

  1. Work with staff to develop systems to ensure consistent, expert project management
  2. Develop the necessary systems, processes, and tools to support the facilitation, collection, and sharing of knowledge that is generated by the programs
  3. Develop a dissemination system to share organizational learning with a broad range of communities
  4. Ensure programs are assessed and leveraged for maximum community and organizational impact
  5. Ensure budgeted enrollment goals are met; oversee program budgets; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the department goals

Job Qualifications & Requirements

Must-Haves:

  • 10+ years of relevant and progressively responsible leadership and management experience; broad understanding and experience in music education and performance across multiple genres. Experience as a teacher and musician with constructive knowledge of music practice, discipline, collaborative initiatives, and institutional expertise in the community, academia, or nonprofit sectors.
  • Must be a strong strategic thinker and an effective business partner to support the CEO in achieving organizational goals. Demonstrated capability to identify organizational challenges and develop effective strategies to address them, balancing building on core programs while creating relevant, inclusive programs in response to community needs.
  • Demonstrated experience building and empowering teams, fostering personal and professional growth through mentorship, coaching, and providing development opportunities.
  • A collaborative and supportive problem-solver with a deep understanding of MacPhail's history and future direction, capable of aligning diverse departments and ensuring strong internal communication.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in prioritizing and integrating equity and inclusion in work and relationships; well-honed cultural competency capabilities.
  • Self-directed and results-oriented with a passion for MacPhail's mission, demonstrated integrity, a positive attitude, and the ability to collaborate effectively with a team of senior professionals.
  • This individual will have taken a hands-on approach in leading a variety of initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a track record of effectively leading a performance-based and outcome-based program and staff. They will have developed and launched new programs and operationalized strategies that have taken a program or organization to the next stage of growth.
  • The successful candidate will have recruited, managed, and developed a strong team of faculty, staff, and program/project leaders. This individual will serve as a “player/coach” to motivate and mentor their team.
  • As a voice/advocate of MacPhail, the Vice President of Music Education will have strong written and verbal communication skills. They will be a persuasive, credible, and polished communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills. This individual must work collaboratively with internal as well as external partners and other organizations, providing exposure for program impact.
