Director of Liturgy and Music - St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Houston, TX
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, a large suburban parish in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, seeks a talented and motivated Director of Liturgy and Music with a passion for musical excellence and love for the sacred liturgy. The successful candidate will serve a vital role on the parish staff. They will serve as principal organist for three Sunday Masses, as well as all major feast days and school Masses, rehearse and supervise paid staff singers, collaborate with the school music teacher in the thriving school music program at large concerts, develop solo organ repertoire, and build the parish choir program. Liturgical responsibilities include scheduling ministers and making weekly worship aids, in addition to other duties. The parish has a twelve-rank Moeller and Sons pipe organ. Both the parish and Classical school music program are thoroughly grounded in the rich treasury of sacred music of the Church’s tradition. The Director of Liturgy and Music is expected to program Gregorian chant, polyphony, and hymnody from the sacred treasury. They should be proficient on organ, as well as have experience in choral conducting and vocal training. The successful candidate must have an appreciation for the liturgical tradition of the Church, along with a pastoral zeal, living as a witness to Christ.
Duties and Responsibilities Reports to the Pastor
Collaborates with the music directors for the Spanish and Vietnamese Masses
Collaborates with the school principal and music teacher in supporting the school music program
Planning, preparation, and execution of music for all English-language liturgical celebrations including weddings and funerals. Serve as organist for most English Masses, all school Masses, as well as weddings and funerals
Rehearse and accompany choirs; supervise assisting organist, staff singers, schedule all musicians, choirs, and cantors.
Work collaboratively with the school music teacher, who conducts the school choristers with the choir for the principal Sunday Mass
Maintain inventory of liturgical supplies and other liturgical duties as assigned
Prepare worship aids in English and Spanish
Attend parish leadership meetings and administer Liturgy and Music budgets
Qualifications Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of Catholic music and liturgy
Catholic in good standing
Leadership, communication, planning and organizing skills and responsiveness to facilitating the worship life of the parish are required
Supervisory experience preferred
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Music or equivalent education or experience
Three to five years in a parish setting
Excellent organ, keyboard, conducting and vocal skills
Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office
Experience in building a children’s choir preferred
Experience with establishing and maintaining budgets
Hours: This is a full-time position with expected weekend and evening hours.
