Position Description


Annunciation BVM Church (St. Mary's), 122 Union St., Catasauqua, PA 18032, is looking for a part-time Choir Director/Director of Music to perform duties relevant to the parish music program. We have an established small but mighty choir with cantors for each Mass.


Job Title: Director of Music

Job Status: Part- Time

Reports to: Pastor


Job Summary: The director would recruit and train volunteers for our music ministries. The director should be able to assist all those who sing in vocal technique and training.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans all aspects of the music for the church choir; provides organ or piano accompaniment.

  • In time, recruit new members and handles all organizational matters.

  • Plans music, procures sufficient music copies as needed for choir and congregation.

  • Conducts rehearsals and liturgy services as designated for assigned choir activities; arranges for a substitute when necessary.

  • Works with other staff members in planning for special rites/music in liturgies relevant to their work, as necessary.

  • Provide prelude music prior to liturgies and is available before hand for consultation.

  • Provide music for weddings and funerals held at the church if requested and available; payment will be made per diem.

  • Provide monthly organist schedule for Masses; this includes a monthly list to the Parish center.

  • Provide monthly hymn selections for Masses.

Minimal Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts degree in Organ Performance or Choral Directing, Liturgical Music, or an equivalent degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.

  • Experience performing and directing music at the Catholic liturgy in a parish setting is preferred.



Other Requirements:

  • Clear records of Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check (PATCH), Pennsylvania Child Abuse History, and Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal Background Fingerprint Check as required under Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Act 153 of 2014 (at least 1 year old.) As well as attendance at a Protecting God's Children class and Mandated Reporter Training.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and arms to play musical keyboards, direct music, type, handle, feel, or operate objects or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.


Working Conditions: Indoors; noisy environment while playing the piano/organ and during choir rehearsals and performances, and in a moderately quiet office setting.


Our Mass Schedule is Saturday Vigil, 4:00 PM. Sunday 8:00 AM and 10:30 AM. Vigil Mass for Holy Days 7:00 PM and the Holy Day itself, 8:00 AM.
