SLS is seeking an experienced Project Engineer to join a fast-growing and dynamic construction manager in pursuit of heavy civil infrastructure projects throughout Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The Project Engineer will be responsible for either one or multiple projects and manage all interactions with internal and external stakeholders including the client. The Project Engineer will also manage the day-to-day execution of the project through all phases from initial startup, construction management, change management, closeout, commissioning and warranty work. The Project Engineer will report to a Senior Project Manager for the schedule, subcontractor management, and quality of each individual project and /or portfolio of multiple projects.

The Caribbean Division has grown a backlog of civil infrastructure projects across Puerto Rico and is aggressively pursuing additional project opportunities with clients such as FEMA, HUD, USACE, VIVENDA (CDBG), PRASA, PRPA, AFI and more.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and maintain a healthy client relationship while protecting company interest and integrity.
  • Prepare project reporting and present project metrics to a Project Manager.
  • Provide oversight of the design program to be managed by the Designer of Record.
  • Provide overall project direction and oversight of construction to be managed by the Field Personnel.
  • Provide oversight of the safety program to be managed by the Safety Manager.
  • Provide oversight of the quality control program to be managed by the QC Manager.
  • Assist the Project Manager in management and oversight of the project schedule through the scheduler.
  • Accurately interpret and carry out contracts and purchase orders with subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Coordinate scheduled activities with subcontractors and ensure project materials are delivered as required.
  • Assist the Project Manager in weekly and /or monthly project meetings with all interested stakeholders.
  • Communicate frequently and effectively to ensure the project team is well informed.
  • Ensure all contract requirements, administrative or otherwise, are satisfied in a timely manner.
  • Identify and advocate internally for all resources necessary for project success.
  • Perform all other duties as may be assigned by the Project Executive or Project Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

  • B.S. Degree in Engineering, Architecture, or Construction Management Required.
  • 3 to 5 years’ Experience as a Project Engineer for heavy civil infrastructure projects.
  • Professional Registration preferred in Puerto Rico.
  • Experience with government contracts preferred.
  • Ability to speak, read and write fluently in English is required.
  • Ability to speak, read and write fluently in Spanish is preferred.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background / security check required.
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office is Required.
  • Must have knowledge of project management concepts from cost estimation to implementation process.
  • Must have knowledge of safety regulations and OSHA requirements.
  • Ability to read plans and perform takeoff.

Physical Demands:

  • Use of manual dexterity, visual and audio acuity.
  • Use of repetitive motion, prolonged periods of sitting and standing, and sustained visual and mental applications and demands.
  • Occasional lifting (up to 40 pounds), bending, pulling and carrying.
  • Quantitative/mathematical ability (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, standard measurements).
  • Ability to work outside in and around construction sites safely.
