Job Description
Marketing & Public Relations Director
Job Summary: This position, working under the direction of the Executive Director, is responsible for presenting the public message of Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF) to the community, donors and businesses through website, social media, marketing, and public relations management.
Responsibilities & Duties:
Marketing
- Develop and curate engaging content for all relevant social media platforms and our public website (e.g., Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads, LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter (aka X) etc.) to market all of the shelter’s adoption events as well as the animals in its care
- Demonstrate the capability to fully optimize and cross reference all of our posts across all relevant social media platforms (e.g., FaceBook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Twitter (aka X, threads) to tell the story of the shelter and its mission, its adoption events and the animals in its care (profiles).
- Demonstrate increases in followers, likes, comments and reposts (engagement) among all social media platforms, year over year
- Demonstrate the ability to create and design engaging animal profile contents for all animals in our care while also providing history of the animal, its personality and skills (obedience, etc.) in a way that highlights the appealing traits of the animal who is being highlighted.
- Develop more comprehensive and consistent branding for SASF of all posts across all media platforms (e.g. FaceBook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Twitter (aka X) & Threads, flyers, brochures about mobile clinic, etc.).
- Conduct market analysis of competition (e.g., ARF, NorthShore, Adopt a Dog, Posh Pets, Dogs Rock, etc.) to gain awareness of patterns of posts, including frequency, platforms used and how we can enhance raising awareness of adoption events, fund-raising events and highlighting animals in our care (e.g., special needs, animals with long stays, medical conditions, etc.)
- Demonstrate ability to harness all local press outlets (TV like Channel 12 News (local), Magazine, Podcasts, local newspaper outlet(s), Dan’s Paper, etc.
- Develop and manage annual marketing plans for the organization and lead in all marketing, advertising, and promotional activities.
- Assume the lead in designing and coordinating the print production of all shelter materials, which include event collateral materials, brochures, pamphlets, information sheets and flyers, banners, posters to ensure all meet style and brand guidelines for consistency (clinic, training, adoption events, etc.).
- Be responsible for generating monthly data reports to show engagement on our website and other social media platforms and included in Board reports
- Be responsible for ensuring all marketing events take place with proper back-ups in place that are fully trained (other staff/volunteers, etc.) so that no planned events are cancelled
- Be responsible for ensuring there are no grammatical errors or omissions in any event collateral materials (location, time, address, raincheck date (where/if applicable).
- Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Public Relations
- Assist with reputation monitoring and maintain a unified brand voice across different media channels.
- Create and produce press releases and coordinate with print and digital media outlets and sponsors to disperse approved content.
- Cultivate strong relationships with media outlets and journalists to ensure efficient communication and maximum coverage for shelter events and advocacy.
- Maintaining an up-to-date press list of journalists, influencers and other media contacts for the shelter. Full understanding that the contact lists of journalists, influencers, specialty veterinary services, rescue organizations, etc., belongs to the shelter and is not owned by the Marketing Department. *
- Responsible for developing this list of contacts* and are made fully available to shelter management, staff and the Board on an as needed basis.
Website Design & Maintenance
- Manage the Shelter website, ensuring that content is up to date and building new pages as needed.
- Overall accountability for the quality of all content posted on the website, including photographs and videos profiling animals in an engaging manner to help facilitate requests for their adoptions.
- Responsible for collaborating with staff (e.g., training, veterinary, kennel care) to design engaging and compelling profiles of the animals in our care.
Experience & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree with a focus on marketing, communications, public policy, education, English, journalism, sales/business or related field preferred.
- At least two years’ experience in event planning, marketing, communications, community outreach or public relations.
- Experience with social media accounts and marketing including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Linked-In, Threads, etc.
- Experience and comfort level in working with donors, volunteers, and the public.
- Experience with non-profit a plus.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to comfortably give presentations to small or large groups.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, WordPress, & Later.
- Knowledge of publishing software and mass email programs like Constant Contact a plus
- Able to work occasional weekends when/if needed; ensure those events are appropriately staffed.
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple and shifting priorities and projects.
