Job Summary/Description:
Alaska's News Source is an award-winning, dominant number-one station looking for a knowledgeable forecaster for this critical role. The ideal candidate will have meteorology experience, a comfortable on-air appearance, a climate reporting skill set, and be able to break down complex weather data into easy-to-understand broadcast and online weathercasts, written stories, and multimedia weather content for digital platforms. We are looking for a Meteorologist to work weekends (1:30p-10:30p) as well as report on weather/science news three days per week unless filling in for another meteorologist's shift during those three weekdays/nights.
Duties/Responsible for (but not limited to) the following:
* Analyze weather data and prepare detailed and engaging weather forecasts
* Generate creative and engaging, content-driven live shots
* Familiarity with the WSI weather system and software is a plus
* Ability to drive long-form severe weather/event coverage solo or in a team setting both in the studio and in the field
* Report on weather/climate topics and deliver live shots from the field during newscasts
* Ability to multi-task, handle breaking weather/events, and adapt to rapidly changing developments
* Cover other meteorologists' shifts, as assigned, as well as the flexibility to cover shifts during severe weather/events
* Post daily stories to our digital platforms and social media, including online weather discussions to explain complex weather phenomena in an easy-to-understand format
* Be actively involved on the station's social media platforms and responsive to viewer inquiries
* Represent Alaska's News Source at community and station-sponsored events, including school presentations and station tours
* Record shortened daily weathercasts for radio partners
* Work closely with the Chief Meteorologist, news management, photographers, and newscast producers to deliver exceptional weather coverage and regular reporting
Qualifications/Requirements:
* Bachelor's degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or a related field (or similar)
* 1+ years experience in broadcast and multimedia news content generation
* Ability to write for broadcast news and digital platforms
* Ability to visualize and create weather graphics
* Understanding of principal journalistic ethics
* Valid driver's license and good driving record
* Willingness and ability to work in extreme weather conditions while reporting on breaking weather events
