Fragment Media Group is hiring: Freelance Reporter -- Daily Dot Tech and Politic

Fragment Media Group, Austin, TX, US

Job Description

Job Description

The Daily Dot is seeking a part-time reporter to join our tech and politics section. As a reporter, you will be responsible for generating story ideas, pitching and finding new beats, and producing original reporting and breaking news articles.

You will report directly to the senior politics and tech editor. The ideal candidate for this position is interested in working morning or afternoon shifts on a Monday-Thursday schedule, approximately 20 hours a week.

The hourly rate for this position is $25 with a three-month review built-in. This job is fully remote.

While the role requires keeping abreast of the top tech and politics news of the day, the ideal candidate will pitch a specific beat to own and cover that stands out from the general day-to-day news.

It could be covering the dystopian output of AI art, influencers developing political clout, in-fighting and drama among tech visionaries, new scammy crypto tokens, or the online hangers-on of our political discourse.

The ideal candidate will have one thing they love to cover and will cover it well.

The reporter will need to:

  • Pitch and find a beat for the Debug section
  • Continually pitch new story ideas that align with the daily news cycle
  • Produce original reporting and breaking news articles on a regular basis, publishing between two to three stories a day

Qualifications:

  • Experience in online journalism is a plus, but if you are looking to get your start, reach out. What we are looking for is someone with a hunger to report, to dive into topics, to dig beyond the surface, and work closely with our editor to produce stories that resonate with our readership and have them hungry for more reporting.

To apply, please submit a resume and a short cover letter. The ideal cover letter will be no more than four or five sentences, introducing yourself, sharing a story you’ve done that you like and its impact, and an idea for what you’d like to cover here and why you think it fits with the Daily Dot brand.
