Integrated Pavement Solutions (IPS) is looking for an experienced, collaborative Technical Director to drive the research and development of IPS’ Manufacturing Test Technologies portfolio, including R&D leadership, product re-formulations, Support Services Requests (SSR’s) and related technical projects associated with manufacturing and scale-up. This position is based in IPS’ St. George, Utah facility. The principal responsibilities of the position include:

• Providing leadership in project management of IPS’ key initiatives supporting Manufacturing Test Technologies. Working closely with Operations, Quality and Product Management groups, the candidate will be accountable for execution of a diverse set of projects covering the IPS portfolio.

• Oversee formula cost optimization and raw material qualification programs without sacrificing quality. Provide technical support for project scale-up from R&D to manufacturing process.

• Identifying and resourcing key technical relationships necessary (i.e. ASTM, AASHTO, DOT’s, etc.) to support IPS’ technical portfolio.

• Supporting customer complaint investigations regarding product quality, application

• Provides competitive analysis work requested by product management

• Sharing information and communicating effectively with senior R&D leadership, and widely across various Company functional team members;

• Coordinating the internal/external technical resources and industry professionals to facilitate the transfer and sharing of technical data and information; and

• Participating in relevant external industry organizations to provide appropriate influence in the Pavement Preservation industry in addition to collecting and sharing information among IPS’ key research professionals.

Requirements:

Candidates should have completed a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science or similar concentration(s), or a MS/BS with equivalent experience


The ideal candidate will have all or most of the following characteristics:

  • Expert understanding of Asphalt Emulsion technologies. Broader experience is coatings and waterproofing technology a plus;
  • Extensive background knowledge and experience in Project Management including Stage-Gate Process
  • Comprehensive understanding and hands-on knowledge of analytical testing techniques (ASTM, AASHTO, etc.) and applications. Familiarity with relevant 3rd Party testing agencies (FM, UL)
  • Strong working knowledge of Quality Management systems such as SPC and/or Six Sigma, with fluency in Microsoft Office Suite and applicable software systems;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into an executive summary format; and
  • Willingness to travel approximately 20%.

Required Experience

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working for a mid-to-large company in a senior R&D leadership position with a demonstrated track record in generating revenue growth through innovative solutions;
  • Overall 8+ year work history in the Asphalt Emulsion industry in a technical capacity;
  • History of a commercially motivated approach to R&D with a willingness to think outside the box and thrive in a fast paced, dynamic, entrepreneurial environment;
  • Thorough knowledge in the implementation of a stage gate process working in a cross-functional team environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead efforts in converting complex scientific concepts from the laboratory phase to manufacturing and ultimately to commercialization; and
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate others while fostering a productive working environment.
