The Futures Design team is seeking a Principal UX Designer to help Amazon experience what it's like to live in the future, today. This role will work closely with the Head of Futures Design and partner with the team's Strategy and Operations leader to drive design impactful innovative solutions across our portfolio. In this position, you will shape our interaction and experience design practice, and influence the future development of devices and services 3 to 10+ years out across Devices and Services organization.
The ideal candidate is adept at working in ambiguity while delivering strategic and innovative thinking across programs, resources, and work that impacts other teams and products across Amazon. The Principal UX Designer will be dedicated to:
- Leveraging customer research and insights to create alignment around shared priorities and success outcomes.
- Combining ideation, prototyping and experimentation to develop innovative roadmaps of future experiences and opportunities.
- Contributing to a focused charter dedicated to this work and driving specific initiative areas where a cross-team, multi-horizon experience plan can inform targeted strategic options.
- Mentoring and developing the design talent primarily within Futures Design, but also across the Devices and Services organization the envisioning team collaborates.
Key job responsibilities
- Define and drive the UX vision for new categories and concepts that impact customers and Amazon roadmaps.
- Operationalize customer-obsessed device and service concept explorations.
- Lead concept development in ideation sessions and design reviews.
- Create customer journeys and use cases in storyboards, wireframes, visual mockups, and prototypes that define the product vision.
- Identify user research needs for ideation and validation.
- Evangelize concepts and design to diverse audiences across Amazon.
- Use business requirements, market research, and customer feedback to assist in developing scenarios, use cases, and high-level requirements.
- Dive deep on consumer insights, product analytics, and competitive intelligence to drive product innovation.
- Identify opportunities to invent and experiment with new technology and interaction patterns.
A day in the life
You will contribute to the team's efforts to think big and explore new ideas, invent and simplify to turn potential and preferable future thinking into tangible solutions and experiences. You'll do this by delivering high-quality interaction and visual design patterns, collaborating closely with other designers, product, and engineering teams. You will work to identify, define, and help establish best practices within the organization and the broader design community to unify design processes, foster innovation and improve efficiency.
About the team
Amazon's Device and Services Design Group (DDG) is a central design studio responsible for developing products and platforms, from the Echo to Alexa Communications, and Fire TV and Tablet.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 8+ years' experience in interaction design (software, mobile, web, other media), with an emphasis on conceptual, visual, interaction design and strategic thinking.
- BA/BS in Design, HCI, or related field; or equivalent professional experience within the design field.
- Demonstrated ability to work confidently and collaboratively with stakeholders.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills; the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and persuasively across different audiences.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Fluency in best practices for multi-platform research, information architecture and design, as well as strong knowledge of usability principals and techniques.
- Experience leading design across multiple platform types, including (but not limited to): web, mobile, tablet, living room, VR, and multimodal devices.
- Masters or advanced degree or equivalent professional experience.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $147,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $244,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
