Job Brief

As a 3D digital artist at Bad Dragon, you'll be one of the fundamental creative driving forces behind our product designs, marketing material, and forays into new kinds of products, working in a creative role that requires flexibility and a passion for innovative design. You’ll be in a fast-paced environment that requires delivering exceptional work while managing multiple projects amid changing priorities.

You must be capable of transitioning between projects, collaborating effectively with various teams, and communicating professionally in all workspaces. We are looking for candidates proficient in all aspects of creating digital renderings of all types, primarily revolving around organic 3D sculpting, although hard-surface, architectural, and natural design work will also be a component. Your role will feature unique opportunities to achieve mastery of procedural modeling, metrology, design-for-manufacture, mold design, and other fields complementary to digital artistry and the fine art of making fantasies real.

Our ideal candidate will excel at the fundamentals of organic modeling, have a broad portfolio of natural anatomy studies, and have finished 3D work to draw from. They will also be able to demonstrate their flexibility and iterative design skills through their previous work. We seek effective multitaskers who can use various software to achieve the desired outcome. This includes ZBrush, Houdini, Maya, Substance Painter, Meshmixer, Fusion 360, or Photoshop to translate a designer's insights into sophisticated visualizations. Candidates must submit a portfolio of past work for consideration.

This is a full-time, on-site position in Phoenix, AZ, with an expected hourly workload of 40 hours per week. The shift will be Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Job Duties

  • Sculpting high-resolution 3D models in ZBrush, Blender, Maya, or Houdini.
  • Develop models into previsualizations using Keyshot, Substance Painter, and Photoshop.
  • Developing product concepts into manufacturable designs, using Meshmixer and Fusion 360, amongst other tools
  • Review and understanding project documents, including photo references and concepts from reference photos, textual descriptions, and digital assets - even clay sculptures.
  • Conceptualize, develop, create, and animate complex, visually stunning digital content.
  • Follows Bad Dragon’s high brand standards, guidelines, and art direction, supported by guidance and consultation with project management or other departments.
  • Can discuss projects at various stages of completion to a professional standard and is comfortable making changes as necessary to ensure designs meet company requirements and approval.
  • Able to work collaboratively, taking direction and feedback from Art Directors, Management, and other stakeholders.
  • Helps to follow, revise, and create new quality standards for modeling and texturing products within the company.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Visual Effects, Computer Animation, or any 3D-related field (preferred but not required)
  • 1-year minimum of professional experience as an in-house 3D designer or Visual effects artist within a marketing or creative environment (or equivalent)
  • Thorough knowledge of human and non-human anatomy
  • Demonstrable 3D sculpting ability with a broad portfolio of work
  • Proficiency in 3D Modeling tools such as ZBrush, Houdini, Maya, and Substance Painter
  • Proficiency in 2D art creation/manipulation packages such as Photoshop
  • In-depth knowledge of 3D principles regarding modeling, rigging, texturing, lighting, overall composition, and workflows
  • Well-presented portfolio showing relevant work examples and process (Required)
  • Proven ability to be detail-oriented and to work efficiently within a production environment
  • Strong self-organization and time management skills
  • Friendly, helpful, and collaborative in a team-based environment; self-motivated, results-oriented self-starter with a solid artistic vision
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with an essential ability to communicate visually utilizing traditional media

Compensation
