Job Summary:

The City of Woodstock is seeking to fill a Part-Time Library Assistant I position with the Woodstock Public Library. The position is responsible to assist patrons with information, directions and circulation services, maintenance of circulation records and the shelving of materials. The work is performed under the supervision of the Circulation Manager and/or the Assistant Circulation Manager.

The days and hours for this position are as follows:
  • Monday: 9:00am - 5:00pm (7 hours)
  • Wednesday: 12:00pm - 8:00pm (7 hours)
  • Friday: 9am - 5:00pm (7 hours)
  • Alternating Saturdays: 9:00am - 5:00pm (7 hours/2 = 3.5 hours per week)

You must be available to work these hours as they are somewhat inflexible and will total 24.5 hours per week on average.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Greets visitors; answers telephone; assists customers or refers to appropriate personnel.
  2. Conducts circulation activities including charging and discharging materials, accepting payments or fines, processing overdue materials and handling lost and damaged items.
  3. Issues and renews library cards for patrons; ensures patrons' accounts are accurate and up to date.
  4. Assists patrons in the location, referral and selection of materials and related information.
  5. Notifies patrons of overdue materials and availability of reserved materials.
  6. Works at desk in the Children's Department.
  7. Registers patrons for library programs.
  8. Performs tasks related to interlibrary loans of materials; checks shelves for materials to be sent through interlibrary loan; packages materials for shipment; unpacks and processes all interlibrary loan materials received; maintains records and statistics of transactions.
  9. Sorts books and audio-visual materials after they are checked in; loads items on carts and places in order before shelving.
  10. Shelves materials returned to or used within the library.
  11. Checks shelves for accuracy; shifts materials on shelves as needed.
  12. Straightens shelves.
  13. Empties book drop; sorts and discharges materials; and loads carts.
  14. Troubleshoots operating malfunctions for computer workstations, printers and photocopiers.
  15. Sets up circulation desk, signs on and off computers and prepares library for opening and/or closing.
  16. Assists in maintaining discipline throughout the library.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of one (1) year prior office, library, or customer service experience; or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities. Spanish language fluency preferred, but not required.

Pay Rate: $17.99/hour. Personal Time (paid time off) of 30 hours per year provided, along with eligibility for vision insurance and supplemental life insurance.
