Description
The City of Norfolks Department of Libraries is seeking a part-time Library Associate I (Youth Services) for the Richard A. Tucker Memorial Branch Library who performs customer service roles at the public service desks, designs and leads Childrens programming, and represents the City of Norfolks Department of Libraries during outreach events.
This position assists with the daily operations of the library. Acts as an assistant to the supervisor. Provides customer service to patrons by developing and delivering age appropriate programs and readers' advisory. Promotes the general use of facilities and assists patrons in the use of collection and computers.
Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $19.95 Hourly
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
+ Conducts Early Literacy programs such as Babygarten, KinderSTEM, Storytime, and 1-2-3 Play with Me
+ Plans and promotes teen programming, including the Teen Advisory Board and YOUmedia
+ Plans and promotes programs for youth and families such as art activities, crafting, cultural programs, etc.
+ Plans and promotes the Summer Reading Program
+ Represents Norfolk Public Library at outreach events at schools, daycares, and with other community partners
+ Maintains and monitors KidZone and program room
+ Provides excellent customer service; assists patrons with library materials and book selections
+ Assists in building and maintaining the librarys juvenile and YA collections
+ Conducts tours of the library, including school tours and field trips
+ Inventories Storytime kits, Summer Reading Program materials, and other materials as assigned
+ Leads, plans, and executes book displays or displays showcasing themes, seasons, etc.
+ Provides regular coverage of Public Service desks
+ Answers reference questions involving resources in print and electronic formats
+ Assists patrons with using computers, copiers, and scanners
+ Provides Readers Advisory
+ Prepares bibliographies and suggested reading lists; sets up book displays
+ Creates monthly office supply lists
+ Performs administrative duties by preparing and analyzing statistical reports
+ Participates in committees and attends training related to the job
+ Promotes the concept of the Family Place Library in Norfolk
+ Proficient in Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
+ Performs administrative duties in collecting data and preparing Excel and written reports
+ Ability to prioritize tasks
+ Ability to lead and work in a team setting
+ Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Education/Experience
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
One year of experience in library or related services.
Preferred Experience:
experience working with children in a library setting, and supervisory experience
Additional Information & Requirements
Work Hours: 20 hours/week; evenings and weekends required.

+ Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicants school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
