Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- MUST BE A STUDENT AT SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY
- Federal Work Study is NOT a requirement
- Students who are Federal Work Study eligible may still apply for this position
- The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the position and is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of all duties.
- Writing consultants provide support at all levels of writing competency, including brainstorming, organization, research, outlining, grammar, punctuation, and style.
- Writing consultants may work with professors to provide special writing assistance to their classes and to promote writing services to their students.
- Writing consultants are responsible for maintaining accurate appointment records and completing written reports of each session in Navigate.
- Writing consultants must participate in mandatory training meetings and ongoing professional development, equivalent to 10hours each semester of employment.
- When not tutoring, writing consultants help develop handouts and other instructional materials and create promotional materials, as designated by the supervisor.
- Maintains the confidentiality of our clients and services.
- Exhibits appropriate and professional behavior.
- Is responsible, dependable and punctual in the completion of assigned tasks, and in notifying the appropriate staff when conflicts or problems occur.
- Complete general administrative duties as necessary to help keep the office running smoothly and efficiently.
CLASS Writing Consultant Qualifications
To be considered for employment as a CLASS writing consultant, students must:
- Demonstrate significant writing ability and advanced communications skills, as demonstrated by a former professor or an academic writing sample.
- Be a current Saint Xavier University student, with a 3.0 GPA, and have taken ENGL 120 or ENG 220 and excelled in either of those courses.
- Possess analytical and advanced communication skills to evaluate and articulate appropriate suggestions for writing improvement.
- Be able to sufficiently maneuver technology for use on the job (scheduling, online consultations, helping students with research/documentation).
- Be able to work with their peers in a manner that is encouraging, and which fosters confidence and enthusiasm to increase knowledge of the writing process.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to helping their peers become more effective writers.
- Be able to work independently and take initiative in fulfilling their responsibilities.
- Exhibit excellent interpersonal skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds with various levels of skills and abilities.
