Muscatine Power and Water - Summer Internship in the Marketing Department

The Muscatine Power and Water (MPW) Marketing Department Internship does not require prior knowledge but will help the selected person gain a better understanding of the utility's marketing and public relations environment. The marketing team is a small team and share responsibilities for communication with both internal and external customers. Some experience with the software we use is helpful, but we have, and we will train an eager, interested individual to use business and creative tools to create and communicate. You will get some ordinary office assignments, but we plan to engage you directly in a wide variety of challenging tasks that will help build your talent stack. The intern will have access to support and resources as needed and will have an opportunity for independent work.

Job Description:
  • Know and work daily in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, Teams, Outlook)
  • Train on and use Adobe Creative Suite applications
    • Miscellaneous video editing (Premiere) as needed
    • Miscellaneous page layouts (InDesign)
    • Miscellaneous image creation (PhotoShop, Illustrator)
  • Able to use office machines (Copiers, Printers, PCs)
  • Handle mass mailings - prep, print, process
  • Occasional field photo/video assignments
  • Available to attend/staff occasional evening or weekend events. May involve lifting/carrying items during setup/treardown.
  • Oversight of Welcome Kit literature, ordering, tracking and filling orders.
  • Update literature files and reorder if needed.
  • Miscellaneous proofreading
  • Perform keyword research and/or write copy, update existing web copy (WordPress and SEMRush)
  • Update images on website
  • Publish news releases to website
  • Draft customer email communications for outages/promotions
  • Create Images for social media posts (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Draft social media posts and publish
  • Gather data from Google Analytics and enter into PowerPoint
  • Call high-impact business customers to notify them when a planned outage occurs
  • Call Customers to set appointments.
  • Provide follow up calls to help get pending agreements back
Resources:

All the members of the Marketing & Sales Department will support the intern and help answer questions as they come up. In addition, the group will meet weekly to track/steer project progress, identify tasks and additional resources needed for upcoming tasks.

Time Frame:

The intern is projected to work 40 hours/week for 9-10 weeks, beginning in late May, but some time off can be scheduled within that time frame.

Position Requirements

Qualifications:
  • Working towards degree in Marketing/Public Relations/Sales preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, and SEMRush applications helpful.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, with ability to build productive professional relationships.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Creativity - ability to imagine the end state and work toward it.
  • Multi-tasking - ability to prioritize and manage several projects at the same time.
  • Must be able to attend work on a regular basis for the duration of the internship and have access to reliable transportation
  • Local Muscatine area connection a plus
