Description
The University of Montana invites applications for a Director of Broadcast Media Center (BMC). As the director you will be a dynamic leader who values public media and has overall responsibility for the leadership, administration, development and operation of the Broadcast Media Center at UM in Missoula. You will be responsible for developing and implementing the necessary vision and strategic plans to ensure the long-term strength and growth of Montana Public Radio and KUFM-TV. In this position you will also represent public radio and television to various individuals, organizations and agencies to cultivate goodwill and understanding of public media and to generate financial support for the operation.
The director serves as the general manager of KUFM-FM (Montana Public Radio) and as the general manager of KUFM-TV as part of the joint UM/MSU unified Montana PBS system.
The Director reports to UM's VP of Marketing, Communications, Experience, and Engagement, and works to maintain a mutually beneficial relationship between the BMC and the University, including recognition of the editorial independence of the BMC news functions. The Director works closely with the KUSM-TV director and general manager to support a collaborative, efficient and enduring public television service to the state.

- Development of BMC resources and projects through on-air fundraising, individual and corporate memberships, and major donor and capital campaign efforts.
- Realization and administration of public and private grant applications and major gift requests to support program purchase and production, community and educational outreach activities, and the maintenance and expansion of operational and capital equipment.
- Creation, acquisition, scheduling and promotion of high-quality digital program content, which is directed to meet the needs of all Montana residents, including local, regional, national and international productions.
- Fiscal management of the BMC, including financial projections and departmental budgets; University, state and federal accountancy; and all activities related to public and private granting agencies.
- Acquisition, operation and maintenance of all BMC/UM property, equipment and supplies, as well as the various engineering and technological endeavors of the station.
- Compliance with the rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, National Public Radio, the Public Broadcasting Service, the State of Montana, the Montana University System, UM and BMC's own internal policies.
- Foster and sustain an open, inclusive and stable work environment.
- Build and sustain collaborative relationships across UM, with particular emphasis on the UM School of Journalism and collaborative relationships with the UM Foundation.
- Build and sustain collaborative relationships with KUSM-TV in Bozeman, the Montana Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education and the Board of Regents.
- Build and sustain effective community relationships across the service area for Montana Public Radio and KUFM-TV.
- Serve as a member of the statewide Friends of MontanaPBS Board of Directors and work with the board, as well as other volunteers, to support its activities.
- Undertake other duties as they arise.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and relevant experience
- Significant, successful, progressively responsible managerial experience
- Proven leadership ability in mission identification, goal setting, and planning and organizing departmental resources
- Demonstrated effectiveness supervising others in the media industry or related fields
- Demonstrated experience in successful financial management, including strategic planning, implementation, assessment and regulatory compliance
- Demonstrated effectiveness in fundraising, including generating grants and major gifts
- Demonstrated effectiveness in public relations
- Demonstrated ability as a collaborative leader able to build alliances with a variety of partners
- Experience and demonstrated effectiveness in listening to and working with media audiences
- Proven ability to work effectively with a variety of governing organizations and advisory groups
- Demonstrated commitment to multiculturalism, diversity and inclusion
- Outstanding communication skills in writing, speaking and listening
- Excellent supervisory and personnel management skills
- Master's degree in business administration, radio-TV, communications or a related field
- Experience in public radio or television
- Current knowledge of trends and challenges facing public media in particular and journalism and broadcasting in general
- Experience working in an academic environment with students, faculty, staff and administration
- Knowledge of national public telecommunications rules, regulations, policies and procedures governing public broadcasting
- Knowledge of Federal Communications Commission regulations governing public broadcasting
