Job Description
The Opportunity:
Intermediate to Senior Roadway Designer for our Urban Transportation Team located in Edmonton. This position will be responsible for assisting senior engineering staff in the design and drafting of urban roadways and laneways, neighbourhood renewal, and cycling and pedestrian facilities. They will also provide design guidance and training to other drafting and junior engineer team members.
This position will support or lead the horizontal and vertical design of projects for new phased arterial roadways and reconstruction or rehabilitation of existing ones, the redesign of entire existing neighbourhood roadway networks, implementing active and public transportation infrastructure (shared pathways, separated bike lanes, rapid bus lanes, etc.), and the reconstruction of back alleys. The projects will require careful attention to design details, particularly in grading and alignment with existing infrastructure and trees as well as offset requirements from existing utilities. The candidate should possess the ability to resolve conflicts in the field during construction as we coordinate with the client, contractor, and utility owners. Experience with design and construction standards of local municipalities is an asset.

What you can expect to do here:
- Collaborating on simple to complex urban roadway designs with engineering team members using Autodesk Civil 3D.
- Preparation of road engineering design drawings, as-built/record drawings and other plans, as directed, using AutoCAD.
- Preparation of design quantities, cost estimates and providing technical support/engineering expertise to the tendering and construction process throughout the duration of projects.
- Analyzing and processing topographical survey information for road design and other applications.
- Designing reconstruction or rehabilitation of existing roads including arterial/collector/local roads, and full neighbourhood renewal with active transportation systems such as shared pathways or separated bike lanes.
- Grading design of roadways, both for grading plans and City of Edmonton grade sheets.
- Interacting with clients, contractors, and subconsultants in the field and meetings to review designs and resolve construction issues.
- Coordinate with all disciplines, sub-consultants, clients, and agencies.
- Perform a wide-range of additional duties intended to support your growth and development within a professional engineering environment. Mentoring of junior staff is required.
What you'll bring to WSP:
- Minimum of 10 years of roadway engineering design experience (contract administration and/or inspection experience considered an asset, a preference for urban roadway experience related to arterial/collector/local roads).
- Civil Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with APEGA, or Civil Engineering Technology / Technician (CET) graduate in good standing with ASET.
- Working knowledge of transportation engineering principles and design standards such as City of Edmonton Complete Street Design and Construction Standards, Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) Design Guidelines, Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors Design Standards, and other Alberta Municipalities (Cities, MD & Counties) design and construction standards are desirable for the position.
- Knowledgeable and proficient in the application of computer aided design/drafting programs including AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
- Competence in Microsoft platforms including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
- Excellent attention to details and ability to generate high quality work.
- Ability to work both independently and as a member of a larger team in a high pace environment.
- Possess good English oral and written communication skills.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license.
