Professor of Practice in Journalism

Tulane University 4, New Orleans, LA

Description

The Department of Communication at Tulane University invites applications for a full-time Professor of Practice (non-tenure track) position in journalism. The ideal candidate will assist students in developing their skills as journalistic investigators, writers, editors, and producers.

The candidate will build on our existing journalism curriculum and develop courses that broaden our students' understanding of journalism's mechanics and their critical media literacy. We seek a colleague whose contributions to our curriculum will cultivate students' writing, interviewing, research, and investigative skills by means of journalistic practice. The candidate will bring their expertise about what it means to produce journalism in the contemporary media environment and advance critical classroom conversations about power, representation, civic engagement, and ethics in the industry. We welcome a range of subject matter expertise within and outside of legacy media, and encourage Professors of Practice to remain embedded in their industries.

Professor of Practice is a teaching-focused position (three-year contract, renewable upon academic review) with a teaching load of 3 courses per semester. We seek a student-centered instructor who employs inclusive and innovative pedagogies. A successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity to deliver engaging instruction for a diversity of students. We also welcome applicants with experience in or a desire to enact community-engaged instruction. Tulane University is the first university in the U.S. to institute an undergraduate service-learning requirement (https://cps.tulane.edu/academics/service-learning-course), and we welcome candidates who envision community engagement in their course design.

The Communication Department centers on critical and global approaches to the study of cultures and identities; film and media texts; and cultural industries and institutions. The candidate will be joining a growing cohort of journalism scholars and practitioners in our department. Our faculty value the department's interdisciplinary connections and are dedicated to an engaged classroom. Tulane University has opportunities for students to work with digital media, podcasting, film, as well as participate in partnerships with media companies and local nonprofits.
