Overall Purpose of the Role
The Senior Editor is a key position in our news reporting team, driving CNN's daily news priorities and serving as a front-line editor across the full range of our text-based digital news output and internal news alerts.
You will work in collaboration with the news video team, as well as other teams across CNN.
This is a new role in an integrated newsroom and the successful candidate(s) will be expected to adapt to new workflows and partnerships with a view to making the new structure a success.
The Senior News Editor will report to the Director, News Reporting in the US.
Core Duties & Responsibilities
As Senior Editor you will:
Edit breaking news and continuing coverage from reporters and field teams, publishing digital stories in a wide variety of formats, as well as network news alerts and other text material as required.
Work in collaboration with senior members of the video team to shape CNN's daily news coverage across platforms.
Assign other editors and reporters and manage stories from conception to publication.
Assist the director, news reporting in managing communications about coverage with other teams, including digital programmers, TV show teams, and other internal partners.
Help reporters shape their stories, and sharpen the framing of digital output and internal news alerts.
Assist homepage and off-platform editors with headlines, push alerts and other framing language.
Develop and commission longer-term editorial priorities and distinctive feature initiatives.
Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to team members to foster growth and development.
Promote a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence across the newsdesk team.
Continuously evaluate and improve processes to optimize efficiency and effectiveness.
What do we need from you?
Proven experience in managing a team of journalists, providing mentorship, motivation and striving to get the best out of everyone.
Extensive editorial experience in the digital media industry.
Strong editorial drive, with proven expertise in and deep knowledge of the global news agenda.
A track record for creativity and innovation and the production of distinctive multi-platform content, particularly in co-ordination with multiple editorial partners.
An ability to juggle competing priorities and execute against tight deadlines.
Exposure to working across different time zones and have a strong understanding of different cultures and sensitivities.
Flexibility and open mindfulness to operate in a fast-changing and exciting news environment.
A real desire to make an impact to make CNN innovative and distinctive.
Track record of collaborating in a deadline-driven news environment.
