Your Opportunity
Stantec is seeking a Principal Scientist/Environmental Engineer/Safety Professional to grow our Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) team and clients in the greater Chicago area and Great Lakes geographic market. The position includes business development and profitable delivery of EHS compliance and permitting solutions through each stage of our client's asset life cycle - including business and property acquisition due diligence, facility expansions, operational compliance, auditing, environmental, health and safety assessment/evaluation, and facility decommissioning and divestiture.

The successful candidate will serve as a Team Leader to grow our professional EHS talent while engaging in focused business development and project delivery, to expand market share with key clients and opportunities aligned with Stantec's strategic growth objectives. Industries served include, but are not limited to commercial, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, mining, oil and gas, power, and other manufacturing clients. This role requires collaboration with Stantec's regional and national sector leaders, business leaders, key account managers, technical leaders and staff. This role also requires collaboration with our specialty advisory health practitioners (ChemRisk) and ESG Advisors, who are serving clients at the higher end of the value curve, to help grow and deliver core EHS and sustainability services as a complement to their advisory practices.
Your Key Responsibilities
Stantec anticipates the following career growth expectations associated with this role:
  • Develop and successfully execute a business plan for Stantec Environmental Services in the Chicago and Great Lakes region for EHS services growth, targeting a practice to sustain approximately 4 to 8 FTEs in 18 to 24-months followed by 8 to 12% year over year.
  • Work independently and with leadership to implement a business plan, provide technical resource group leadership, and oversee the delivery of EHS projects to our clients.
  • Develop business relationships with a focus on targeted key clients in the Great Lakes Region (IL, IN, MI, OH) with additional commitment to developing national and global relations to generate opportunities for Stantec worldwide.
  • Collaborate with key account managers to sell and deliver new EHS and sustainability related services to key clients.
  • Lead the response to requests for proposals generated through the candidate's business relationships and as identified by Stantec Account and Client Managers.
  • Develop, coordinate, and grow a team of EHS consulting professionals.
  • Direct client interaction and accountability. Manage multiple clients and projects and assume responsibility for the relationship and Stantec deliverables.

Projects may include:
  • EHS and sustainability program development consulting services for targeted clients, delivering templated tools and solutions to benefit their business risk reduction while expanding Stantec business growth.
  • EHS and sustainability regulatory compliance assessments and audits at commercial, manufacturing, and other client facilities and where clients perform field activities. May also include sustainability support with energy transition and GHG/air compliance focused technical consulting services.
  • Technical consulting for clients on regulatory permitting and compliance matters including obtaining environmental permits for new facilities and modifications, permit management, routine regulatory reporting (i.e., air, hazardous waste [RCRA and non-RCRA], EPCRA, etc.), occupational health, industrial hygiene, and industrial safety.
  • On-site EHS support, and oversight of a growing team delivering on-site/location-based services at client facilities, including completion of routine inspections, development of EHS programs, and correction of deficiencies in accordance with OSHA, DOT, federal, municipal, and/or state environmental regulations.
  • EHS due diligence, Phase I ESAs, and environmental, health and safety compliance assessment in support of business and property acquisitions and client facility operational excellence.
  • Energy and water use efficiency evaluations and implementation of improved sustainability measures, cultivating a complementary practice in collaboration with Stantec ChemRisk and ESG Advisory colleagues.
  • EHS support during facility decommissioning, decontamination, and divestiture.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
Required:
  • A qualified candidate will have proven experience developing and leading programs, writing, and implementing business plans, and leading a team of EHS professional service providers over a broad geographic market.
  • A minimum of 15 plus years of direct relevant experience supporting or leading all aspects of EHS, including but not limited to: due diligence, permitting, auditing, and compliance assurance; EHS procedures development and training in industrial and manufacturing settings; air quality, wastewater, chemical management, bulk liquid storage, and waste handling; industrial hygiene, environmental assessment, and industrial safety compliance.
  • Air quality permitting and compliance experience preferred.
  • Participation in EHS audits to local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Travel may be required for the purpose of conducting client, staff and leadership engagement, business development and program/project delivery of EHS assessments, on-site EHS support, or for off-site meetings with clients and/or regulatory agencies.
  • Capable of promoting Stantec and discussing/cross selling all our service offerings with a wide range of clients and/or prospective clients.
  • Practical ability to analyze technical data, perform research, demonstrate technical knowledge, and problem solve.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills (able to communicate solutions in writing, verbally and graphically).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, SharePoint, and PowerPoint).
  • Professional Engineering (PE), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Environmental and Safety Compliance Officer (CESCO), and/or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or the like preferred, and/or relevant demonstrated professional experience.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
  • This position will require the successful passing of a pre-employment physical and drug screen. Annual and/or random drug screening may be required by some clients.
Education and Experience
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Science or related field.
  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience.
  • Consulting experience required.
  • An exceptional behavioral safety commitment and experience driving this across a team and/or professional services organization.
  • Proven success developing and implementing a business plan with clear strategic objectives, collaborative leadership across multiple geographic operations and multiple client sectors.
  • Proven success providing inspired leadership and attracting/retaining a team of professional service providers.
  • Highly experienced Program and Project Management experience, with proven financial and risk management acumen in a professional services business.
  • Effective marketing and business development acumen, with efficient and successful track record.
  • Exceptional communication skills for engagement with Stantec colleagues, clients, and client management skills.
  • Field experience is mandatory, focusing on industrial EHS compliance and permitting experience and environmental assessment implementation and oversight.

Preferred:
  • Master's Degree in Engineering, Environmental Science or related field.
  • Experience in commercial (legal, entertainment, retail, etc.), manufacturing, and industrial sector projects, power generation, oil and gas, and mining experience is preferred.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to life and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs. Willingness to travel for project work and business development opportunities.
