Congress Executive Producer

POLITICO, Arlington, VA

POLITICO is seeking a creative, dynamic and strategic leader to drive the growth of POLITICO's Capitol Hill coverage and to ensure POLITICO's Congressional products are engaging policymakers and public policy professionals to fuel subscriber growth.

POLITICO's Congressional coverage is central to the success of our organization and key to reaching our target audience, most especially our professional subscribers. POLITICO is looking for an accomplished leader to guide the development, execution, and distribution of our Congressional products and to ensure POLITICO is home to the most impactful, relevant, and urgent Congressional reporting as we compete in an increasingly crowded space. The Executive Producer will partner with the Professional Subscriptions team to deliver the most essential products for public policy professionals to drive the continued growth of POLITICO's overall subscription business. In addition, the EP will work closely with POLITICO's Media Solutions team to ensure the success of our newsletters, blogs, and other Capitol Hill-focused products. The Executive Producer will also work in partnership with the Playbook Executive Producer to refine and advance engagement with Congressional influencers across the suite of products under the Playbook and Congress umbrellas.

Success as the Congress Executive Producer means the content has even greater impact, reaches a highly influential audience on the Hill, yields an increase in revenue of 20% and is viewed with envy by competitors in DC and nationally.

The ideal candidate has exceptional editorial judgment; a proven track record of leading high-impact journalism and journalists, while driving audience engagement across multiple platforms; and excellent leadership, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams.

What You'll Do:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive, multiplatform content and editorial strategy for POLITICO's Capitol Hill coverage.
  • Support and elevate POLITICO's Congress editors by giving them the tools to ensure POLITICO's Congressional coverage is the best-edited in its competitive space.
  • Ensure POLITICO has the most impactful, relevant, and urgent Congressional coverage of any publication in order to drive the growth of POLITICO's subscription business.
  • Collaborate with senior management to establish and achieve revenue, audience, and engagement targets for POLITICO's Capitol Hill coverage.
  • Lead collaboration and information sharing between the Congressional team and other POLITICO teams, particularly the Playbook, White House and Politics teams.
  • Analyze and refine audience data, feedback, and metrics to optimize content performance and drive audience loyalty. Collaborate with marketing, communications, and audience teams on strategies that will deepen awareness in the marketplace.
  • Foster a culture of innovation in our Congressional coverage, while also building partnerships to leverage creative leaders throughout POLITICO's newsroom.
  • Inspire, motivate, and manage POLITICO's Congressional team, including reporters and editors.

What You'll Need:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in journalism, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong editorial judgment with a proven ability to set and drive editorial and creative direction across a large team and across multiple platforms.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to think creatively, adapt to change, and drive results in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
  • Knowledge of the business of media and desire to evolve a thriving business model for journalism.
  • Agility and creativity when faced with increased competition and changing market dynamics.
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

What Success in this Position Looks Like:

  • "Beat" our closest rivals on congressional coverage by cementing POLITICO's preeminence on Capitol Hill and increasing 1) open rates for POLITICO's Congress-focused newsletters; 2) the percent of legislators and their staffs who subscribe to a POLITICO PRO or free newsletter
  • Increase ad revenues associated with Congressional content by 20%
  • Create a true funnel from Congressional content to Professional subscriptions in partnership with the audience, data and product teams
  • Reimagine existing products - or build new ones - to more fully immerse POLITICO in the minute-to-minute ("hourly") conversation on the Hill, and architect a plan for building a community around the Hill in partnership with the brand team and business teams
  • Establish an editorial strategy for narrating personalities and politics of the Hill for a larger audience, and then oversee its execution
