Job Overview

The position of News Director is responsible for the leadership of the station's news department and directing its operations across all broadcast and digital platforms. The News Director manages all personnel and resources of the department and is responsible for evaluating, establishing, and executing the vision of 5 Eyewitness News.

Job Responsibilities

  • Developandmaintainthestrategicvisionandeditorialdirectionfor5EyewitnessNews.
  • Collaboratewiththe GeneralManagerand station's management team on immediate and long-termobjectives,overall business goals, andactionplans.
  • Directall daily operationsofthenewsdepartmenttoensurethevisionand missionof5EyewitnessNewsisunderstoodand delivered bytheentire newsorganization.
  • Responsibleandaccountableformaintaining overallqualityandgrowing the performanceofthestation'snewscontentbyevaluating and critiquing all newscastsanddigitalcontent (including streaming channels, websites, and mobile applications.)
  • Executethe station's primary commitmenttobeing first and accurate with breakingnewsandsevere weathercoverageacross all broadcastanddigitalplatforms.
  • Continually developastrongNewsDepartmentstaffthroughapplicabletraining, evaluation andcontinuing communicationwithteammembers.

  • Lead ongoing recruitment todevelopa diverseandtalentedpoolofcandidates for all positions in the department. Interview and hirenewemployeesforthe department.
  • Uphold the high journalistic standards at the core of Hubbard Broadcasting's history.Maintain accuracyandfairness in the newsroom's story selection and presentation.
  • Beanengagedmemberofthecommunitywhounderstandsthewide diversity of the market, including its many neighborhoods,issues,andspecialcharacteristics.
  • Understandandincorporatemarketresearchandyourowntestedinstinctstocontinue a long history of innovation in newsgathering and presentation.
  • Responsibleforalladministrativedutiesof the department, including budget preparation and expense management, personnel supervision, and adherence to company policies.
  • All other duties as may be assigned.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor'sdegreeinBroadcastJournalism,orrelatedfield,oranequivalentcombinationof educationandexperiencetomeetthe requirementsoftheposition.

  • 10+yearsoftelevisionnews experience withaminimumof5yearsofexperienceas a senior newsroom manager in a large (top 50 ranked) market.
  • Demonstrable mastery of all phases of television news operations, including news writing and reporting, newscast producing and formatting, digital content management, social media management, and newsgathering technologies.
  • Dynamic,strongleaderwithaclearvisionandabilitytocommunicateittotheir team.
  • Excellentcommunicationskills,bothoralandwritten. Comfortable working with contemporary business technology such as computers and smartphones.
  • Basicunderstandingofcurrent newsroomtechnologies, includingnewsroom content systems, digital content creation software, and newsgathering tools.
  • Understandingofbasicfinancial management withdemonstrable experienceinpreparingandcontrollingdepartmentalbudgets.
