Job Title: Mechanical Designer Location: Orlando, FL Duration: 06 Months Job Description: Performs complex re-design and development efforts for mechanical/structural systems of theme park venues to provide increased safety, reliability, and operational improvements. All work shall be in conformance with the Engineering Drawing Standard, ASME Y14.5, ASTM F24 Committee guidelines, and other applicable codes. Responsible for initiating sketches and notes that will evolve into detail and assembly type drawings with minimal supervision from the Design Supervisor, Lead Designer, or Engineers. Projects will include initial design and re-design of mechanical, structural, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems. This includes acting as a liaison with partners and external fabrication/installation vendors. Reviews and provides approval as the Design Checker on ECN documents after qualification by the Design Supervisor. RESPONSIBILITIES: Completes moderate to complex design projects for mechanical and structural systems at the Rides and Attractions to enhance guest comfort, reliability, quality, and safety (projects involve multiple design tasks). Ensures all designs comply with industry standards for fabrication and machining practices, including GPS, ASME, ASTM, ANSI, AWS, and OSHA, among others. Assists Engineers with observations, field measurements, troubleshooting, problem-solving, design, and testing. Serves as a vendor interface, resolving production problems with vendors. Plans and lays out project tasks for increased productivity and effectiveness, including closing out tasks with little or no supervision. Provides design review support to other Designers for accuracy, tolerance stack-up, form and fit, ease of manufacture, and cost-effectiveness. Assists QC and/or field technicians with information and drawing clarification as necessary. Acts as a liaison with partners for the fabrication and installation of projects. Reviews drawings for accuracy, conformity, fit, tolerance, and adherence to applicable standards of geometric tolerance, weld symbols, fit and clearance conventions, proper fastener specifications and usage, finish, radii, etc. Checks the work of other Designers and provides constructive feedback. Researches, evaluates, and retrieves archived information in Document Control as necessary to complete assignments. Prepares and completes Engineering Change Notice (ECN) paperwork in an accurate and thorough manner. Ensures the security and confidentiality of all drawings and documents in their possession. Participates in applicable information sessions, staff meetings, safety meetings, and other sessions that encourage open communication, teamwork, and process improvement. Assists in the development of and participates in drafting compliance 5% training for other Designers. Participates in other developmental training as necessary. Understand and actively participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established policy, procedures, training, and team member involvement activities. Perform other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Must be detail-orientated and have highly developed organizational skills. Flexibility and multi-tasking are essential. Must be highly knowledgeable on the development of individual parts, weldments, and assemblies. Must understand basic machine operation and be current on theme park industry trends. A clear understanding of GD&T is necessary. May need to provide flexible work hours on occasion to accommodate access to venues. EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED - Required. Associate of Science/Arts degree in Mechanical or Electrical area OR equivalent from two-year college or technical school - Preferred. CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Certificate(s) of formal training in Parametric 3D Computer Aided Design (Inventor or Solidworks) required. EXPERIENCE: 5+ years of technical theme park design work including technical writing, knowledge of composite materials, reverse engineering, and industry standards required. 8+ years of total experience is required in design, support, and installation of dynamic mechanical, structural, pneumatic, and/or hydraulic integrated systems. OR, an equivalent combination of education and experience. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: COMPLEXITY OF WORK Moderately routine; general policies applied. Some decision- making. RELATIONSHIPS OUTSIDE WORK UNIT Influences decisions of moderate nature requiring high degree of tact. ON-THE-JOB TRAINING Policies and Procedures; departmental policies and procedures. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, write, and speak English required; other languages a plus. Ability to read and interpret documents such as drawings, operating and maintenance manuals, design criteria specifications, and safety rules. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries from internal customers and external vendors. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance in imperial and metric units. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving multiple variables in standardized situations. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES Proficiency to read all types of drawings (architectural, construction, mechanical, electrical, fabrication, manufacturing, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other similar types). Proficient with a personal computer using various design software packages including: AutoCAD, AutoDesk Inventor, and/or Solidworks. Communication skills in oral, written memos, and written procedures are required.
