We are seeking an innovative and highly skilled Broadcast Systems Engineer/Architect to join our team.

 

The Role

 

CPAC is seeking an organized, technically advanced individual to join our technical operations and engineering team. The chosen individual will be expected to work in office and will primarily be responsible for broadcast system and media network design, project management and integration, and maintenance while being actively involved in supporting daily operations and end user support. 

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Design, implement, administer, monitor, sustain, and support broadcast technology that employ a broad variety of hardware, software, applications, and operating systems that enable CPAC to acquire, produce, edit, store, and playout content.
  • Provide clear leadership and ownership for all aspects of technical projects from start to finish including conducting a needs analysis, solution design, budget preparation and tracking, procurement (solicit proposals, defining a scope of work, issue purchase orders), implementation (design, installation, commissioning, training), and reporting.
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation related to broadcast and IT system design, specifications, drawings (AutoCAD), service records, operations manuals, etc.
  • Project management - responsible for the scope, schedule, quality, and client and stakeholder communication and satisfaction of broadcast system projects throughout their entire lifecycle.
  • Hands on management and implementation of broadcast engineering projects from start to finish including conceptualization, specifications, planning, procurement, execution, monitoring, and closure.
  • Integrate media over IP workflows, specifically deploying SMPTE 2110 audio/video flows in a managed IT ecosystem.
  • Produce and review technical statement of work and training documentation and provide/deliver support, training, and guidance for employees and contractors.
  • Active participation as member of support team including responding to escalations, system outages, malfunctions, or other technical problems, and conduct diagnostic testing, repair, and replacement activities.
  • Create documentation including but not limited to test plans, operating runbooks, and project documentation (scope of work, run lists, drawings).
  • Work with security team members to identify, monitor, and mitigate potential cybersecurity risks and vulnerabilities and install patches.
  • Provide on-call after-hours support via phone, remote troubleshooting, and if needed, in attending person.
  • Travel on occasion to deploy and support infrastructure and operational requirements.
  • Keep up-to-date knowledge on industry trends and best practices.
  • Client service oriented with excellent organizational skills.

Qualifications (Education, Skills, Knowledge, and Experience):

 

  • Completion of university degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Proficient with Office 365 and AutoCAD.
  • 3+ years’ experience in designing and supporting M&E technical systems 
  • 2 years’ experience providing end user technical support in a customer first environment.
  • 2 years’ hands on experience configuring, managing, and supporting network switch infrastructure in a live media production environment. Arista experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with broadcast standard video formats including high-definition, UHD and HDR video systems, deployed using SDI and SMPTE 2110-20/-22 IP transport. Experience with other streaming media network protocols is a plus.
  • Familiarity with networked audio systems and transport protocols including 2110-30, AES-67, Ravenna, and Dante.
  • Network Topology Design: Ability to design and modify network topologies to facilitate efficient routing, including multicast and unicast flows 
  • Advanced Routing Expertise: Proficient in advanced routing protocols and techniques, including OSPF, BGP, and EIGRP, to optimize network performance and reliability 
  • Multicast Routing Specialization: In-depth expertise in MCAST routing, understanding various multicast protocols such as PIM, IGMP, and DVMRP, and their applications in network environments.
  • Familiarity with Ansible for automation and orchestration, Arista CloudVision, and Arista Media Control Service (MCS), is an asset.
  • Experience supporting Lawo VSM and Home, Evertz Magnum, as well as broadcast equipment from Imagine, GV, Harmonic, and Ross, including but not limited to cameras, studio robotics, intercom, switchers, servers, automation systems, and audio consoles.

  • Physical demands include working in both office, equipment room/data center environments, and remote production locations (i.e. convention centers, theatres). Ability to work on a 6-foot ladder and carry, push, and pull up to 50lb occasionally (i.e. equipment installation in rack, inspect cabling in tray, etc.) required.
  • Must be able to occasionally work after hours as required (i.e. maintenance, upgrades, emergencies) and be available on call for after-hours support.


This is a full-time permanent position with competitive benefits. The successful candidate will be required to work in person at the CPAC office, downtown Ottawa.  Typical work hours are Monday to Friday from 10:00-18:00 eastern but subject to change based on operational requirements.
