JOB GOAL: Under direct supervision of a licensed media specialist, the goal of the Library Assistant is to provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning library environment in which teachers and students can take full advantage of available resources.

- High School Diploma or equivalent by OAR 581-37-030, Oregon Department of Education (training in library science preferred).
- 18 years of age or older.
- Ability to work in harmony with and to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with students, parents, and teachers.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Possess the knowledge of basic library/media methods, practices and terminology, and procedures.
- Possess knowledge of English usage, spelling, mathematics, and a basic understanding of subject areas in which this position is to provide assistance.
- Provide basic instruction and guidance to students using library resources, including educational computer hardware and software.
- Ability to operate a personal computer to input and retrieve data.
- Be self-directed and perform duties for extended periods of time in the absence of an immediate media supervisor.
- Organize and prioritize a wide range of tasks and select work methods which allow for the timely and accurate completion of tasks.
- Perform a variety of clerical work and operate standard office machines such as copiers and printers.
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
- Perform physical requirements which may include:
- Moderate degree of physical stamina
- Frequent standing, walking, and/or bending
- Frequent lifting up to 20 lbs. and occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent twisting, reaching, handling, and finger manipulatio

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include the following. Other duties may also be assigned.
- Assist students in locating materials and in researching information; answer questions about library procedures and resources.
- Assist students and staff with check-in and check-out of library materials and technology (i.e., computers, Chromebooks, filmstrip viewers, etc.).
- Assist with and conduct instruction for students on library use, explain the check in/out procedures, use of the card catalog, and other library procedures; read stories to groups of students.
- Receive new library materials and supplies and verify accuracy and completeness of shipments.
- File catalog cards and shelf list cards; shelve books and periodicals; make minor repairs to print materials; care for and make minor repairs to audio-visual equipment; assist with the inventory of library equipment and materials.
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
- Monitor behavior of students and handle disciplinary matters in accordance with the district's discipline procedures.
- Maintain current inventory of media supplies and suggest items for acquisition as needed.
- Maintain and communicate building inventory levels of Chromebook devices available for use and needing repairs to the IT group monthly or if stock is needed.
- Assist in maintaining a positive learning environment, proper health conditions, general neatness and attractiveness of the library and its displays.
- Assist students and staff in the use of computers/Chromebooks, CD-ROMs and software.
- Exercise general supervision over the scheduling of the library and materials for classroom use.
- Participate in in-service programs as assigned.
- Perform such other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as may seem appropriate by the Board and Administration.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, BONDING, AND/OR TESTING REQUIRED:
- Possess and maintain a valid First Aid card if required
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
