Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED; one year of customer service experience (preferably in a public library); or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of principles and practices of customer service; of standard office practices and procedures; of basic library services and functions. Excellent customer service skills. Basic money handling skills including use of a cash register. Ability to accurately file alphabetically and numerically; to operate a personal computer and related software and current library technologies; to interact with a variety of people from different cultures and backgrounds and of varying ages; to problem solve; to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers. Bilingual (English/Spanish) verbal skills desired.

Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.

WHO WE ARE:
Chesterfield Public Library is currently hiring for a part-time Substitute Library Assistant who shares our passion and who is willing to learn and apply the CCPL Way in customer interactions.

The Library Assistant provides service to the public including book check in/out, prepares material for circulation, basic clerical and computer operation.

DUTIES INCLUDE:
Operation of electronic library system to assist patrons with library processes including reserves, renewal and checking out/in books and other material, answer routine questions in-person or by phone.
Assist patrons with basic account services such as resetting PIN numbers, account set-up, account log-in assistance, printing documents, basic computer and library equipment use and technology assistance with personal devices such as tablets, smart phones, Kindles, etc.
Provide assistance or answer questions to assist patrons by phone or in person.
Collect fines and fees for materials and services and process according to library procedures.
Prepare various materials such as books, DVD's and other material for circulation
Sorts and shelves various types of library materials and equipment; maintains shelves in proper order.
Perform other work as required.

This position is a part of an approved Career Development Plan (CDP) and offers career progression opportunities and salary incentives, as funding permits, based on performance, qualifications, and experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is performed in library office, library locations and other professional settings; extensive use of computers and devices required. Light to medium, occasionally heavy, physical requirements which may include, sitting, standing, walking, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, climbing, stooping, kneeling crouching, keyboarding, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal and reading; not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
