Description:

Under the direction of the Library Supervisor a lead clerk performs book processing, helps with problem bins and staff training needs in addition to all other routine clerk duties; is in charge of staff in the absence of other full-time staff.

Duties:

· Assists Supervisor with new employee training.

· Helps train volunteers on covering and processing books.

· Is in charge of staff in the absence of other full-time staff.

· Assists and reports back to circulation supervisor regarding book processing, problem bins and staff retraining needs.

· Operates on-line computerized circulation terminals to check materials in and out and performs other patron-related tasks.

· Ascertains patron status as necessary to determine eligibility for further library privileges using computerized circulation terminal.

· Collects and records fines and charges using follow-up steps as necessary to ensure that status of patron is correct.

· Resolves patron overdue or fine complaints and refers difficult problems to the appropriate supervisor or assigned clerk for final resolution.

· Accepts library card applications, verifies identification, performs necessary database search, issues cards.

· Identifies and separates items needing repairs during check-out / check-in processes to maintain quality and usefulness of materials in the collection using library guidelines.

· Provides directional information when requested by patrons using knowledge of physical arrangement of the building, collection and equipment.

· Provides surveillance of copy machine and provides minimal instructions to patrons in the use of equipment to assure correct use.

· Inspects, maintains, and circulates audiovisual equipment and materials: notes and reports damage or needed repair.

· Checks shelves to ascertain correction of patron records.

· Performs opening and closing functions of the library, as assigned, to assure efficient operation of the facility using library guidelines and procedures.

· Shelf-reads in assigned areas to ensure proper shelf order of materials.

· Answers telephones, takes accurate messages, and refers calls appropriately.

· Performs all other support tasks when assigned to assure efficient operation of the library using library guidelines and procedures and following oral or written instruction. The support tasks may include maintaining periodical collection, preparing over dues, mending materials, processing inter-library loans, maintaining the cleanliness of facilities, placing and calling.

· Holds, processing of materials, and any other tasks the Director may deem necessary for the proper functioning of the library.

· Provides reference service when necessary to provide continuity of service.

· Instructs and assists the public in the use of the internet when necessary.


All other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

Must be a High School graduate or equivalent with three (3) years Library experience at Springville City Library. Equivalent of directly related education may substitute for some experience. Must be available to work rotating shifts which includes mornings, afternoons and evenings. Must be fluent in speaking, reading and comprehension of the English language. Spanish speaking is a plus. Must possess a valid Utah driver's license. Must be 18 or older.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

· Must have knowledge of alphabetical and numerical sequence, knowledge of library procedures and philosophy, and knowledge of services offered in the Library.

· Must have knowledge of cash handling procedures and library computer system and basic reference sources.

· Must be able to operate an on-line data base terminal and a variety of audio-visual and computer equipment.

· Must be able to move and arrange materials in alphabetical and numerical order. Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

· Must be able to negotiate reference questions.

· Must be able to manage numerous tasks and assignments at a time, with frequent interruptions.

· Must be able to deal appropriately with people in situations that may, at times, become confrontational, stressful or uncomfortable.

Physical Demands:

Perform duties that may include light physical effort such as lifting, bending, stooping and walking and prolonged sitting or standing at a desk or computer terminal. Occasionally may lift materials weighing as much as 40 pounds.
