The Designer works closely with Engineers and other Designers creating designs, 3D models, and drawings of a complex nature for mining haul trucks. This position performs difficult assignments requiring considerable initiative, resourcefulness, and design expertise and analyzes new and existing products to eliminate design issues in manufacturing assembly and operation. Exercises independent judgment in selecting and interpreting data based on knowledge of design intent. Provides advice and guidance to Drafters and works with other departments to provide engineering documentation and information. The Designer is responsible to ensure that products developed meet the required cost targets, technical specifications, and that projects are completed within the projected timelines.

Responsibilities

Designer 1:

Works under the direction of Engineers or Senior Designers. Drafts detailed drawings of assemblies, subassemblies, installations and piece parts as required in 2D & 3D Computer Assisted/Aided Design (CAD) packages. Modifies designs to correct operating deficiencies. Prepares Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and other engineering documentation. Assists in investigating engineering design/production problems and initiates appropriate action. Promotes effective interdepartmental communications for joint design projects. Works with Engineers to design, install, test, analyze, and maintain truck components, equipment, systems and processes to meet requirements, applying knowledge of engineering principles. Prepares Bills of Materials (BOMs) within the Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) system. Understands and complies with quality assurance requirements. Designer 2:

All duties of Designer 1 plus: Progressive truck system knowledge. Successful Project experience. Successful CAD/EDM skills progression. Designer 3:

All duties of Designer 2 plus: Helps review designs and drawings for compliance with company and industry standards (examples: ISO, ASME, EN). Proactively communicates interdepartmentally for joint design projects. Proposes changes to designs to Engineers. Assists in the preparation of design reviews. Designer 4 (Senior):

All duties of Designer 3 plus: Takes ambiguous concepts and make proposals, 3D models or assembly drawings to help develop solutions. Prepares cost estimates for changes to the standard product. Monitors output of other Designers and Drafters for detailed drawings of assemblies, subassemblies, installations & piece parts as required in 2D & 3D Computer Assisted/Aided Design (CAD) packages. Prepares and conducts some design reviews. Reviews designs and drawings for compliance with company and industry standards (examples: ISO, ASME, EN) Competencies

Education and Experience:

Designer 1: Associate Degree (A.S/A.A.S.) or, equivalent combination of education and 4 years of relevant design experience. Designer 2: Associate Degree (A.S/A.A.S.) with 2 years of relevant experience in an engineering environment or, equivalent combination of education and 6 years of relevant design experience. Designer 3: Associate Degree (A.S/A.A.S.) with 4 years of relevant experience in an engineering environment or, equivalent combination of education and 8 years of relevant design experience. Designer 4 (Senior): Associate Degree (A.S/A.A.S.) with 6 years of relevant experience in an engineering environment or, equivalent combination of education and 10 years of relevant design experience. Designer 1:

Working knowledge of 3D model based design/drafting techniques, practices, dimensioning and tolerance. Ability to read documents such as schematics, operating and maintenance manuals, and procedure manuals and have a basic understanding. Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Knowledge of engineering procedures and standards. Minimal oversight needed to complete tasks with accuracy in a timely manner. Designer 2:

All skills of Designer 1 plus: Knowledge of relevant drafting tools or computer-assisted design CAD or drafting equipment and software. Working knowledge of Creo design/drafting techniques, practices, dimensioning and tolerance. Ability to use Microsoft Office. Knowledge of the ERP system as it relates to truck BOM structure and inventory control. Designer 3:

All skills of Designer 2 plus: Working knowledge of top down design techniques. Proactive and clear communicating with vendors and customers. Highly trained in advanced design and drafting techniques and software. Ability to read and research specifications & standards to help engineers audit designs for compliance. Designer 4 (Senior):

All skills of Designer 3 plus: Demonstrated ability to understand the whole truck and all of its systems, operation and service requirements. Ability to identify task requirements and self-evaluate progress of project. Ability to mentor and lead others in daily tasks. Additional Requirements:

Travel to customer or supplier sites domestically and internationally up to 10% of the time. Ability to complete and maintain mine certifications or safety training such as Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) hazard training. Ability to maintain a valid driver's license and passport.
