Overview:
We are seeking a Communications Specialist who will focus on supporting the Facilities and Operations (F&O) organization that is responsible for maintaining ORNL's facilities and infrastructure, delivering custom research support, and providing 24/7 utility and security support. Facilities and Operations is the largest ORNL directorate, with 1000+ professional and technical experts on staff who serve the needs of ORNL's 7,000+ employees. This position requires someone who can work with others to efficiently provide regular communications on F&O services, staff, safety, community engagement, workforce development, and more. Candidates should possess experience across basic communications disciplines including writing, editing, and website management; they also should be comfortable engaging IT professionals as well as creative experts, such as designers, photographers, and videographers. This position resides in the Creative Services Division of the Communications and Community Engagement Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Support F&O and CCED staff with developing and implementing strategies for increasing ORNL's familiarity with F&O staff and services. Produce content as assigned for inclusion in F&O's Performance Monday newsletter and the Safety Toolbox publication that is shared broadly across the laboratory. Recommend and write stories as assigned on behalf of F&O for dissemination through ORNL Today and other news platforms. Assist in monitoring communications needs of bargaining unit staff and determining best methods for reaching staff members who do not work regularly in an office setting. Support F&O, IT, and CCED staff with ensuring F&O websites are informative, up to date, and aligned with ORNL web design standards. Regularly meet with F&O and CCED subject matter experts and leaders to share and receive feedback and modify plans as necessary. Support F&O community engagement and student outreach efforts; be a liaison with CCED's community engagement experts to ensure alignment with lab-level priorities. Collaborate with technical editors, graphic designers, and others to ensure adherence to grammar, style, and brand guidelines and to share best practices. Comply with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements. Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics. A BS degree in communications, journalism, English, or related field. Experience producing communications products for general audiences. Preferred Qualifications:
Two years of experience producing communications products for general audiences. Experience fulfilling urgent requests in a timely and professional manner. Experience writing for and supporting communications for a manufacturing, service, technical, or scientific organization. Ability to develop, update, and maintain informative and compelling website content, adhering to a consistent schedule to keep information fresh. Ability to support communications projects from concept to completion within deadlines and in collaboration with other team members. Experience working in SharePoint or other content management systems. Ability to balance multiple demands with a sharp attention to detail to perform professionally and capably under pressure. Previous experience with DOE or other government agencies.
