JOB TITLE: Senior Media Relations Manager

SALARY: $92,000 - $103,000 Annually

FSLA STATUS: Exempt

HOURS: Full-Time; 40 hours/week

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Hybrid, working 2 days per week at SHH office in Brooklyn Park, MN

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for leading media relations and executive messaging for Second Harvest Heartland, in support of communications objectives and the organization's strategic priorities. The Senior Media Relations Manager works closely with the Director of Communications and other senior leaders and their teams by providing both strategic and executional media relations in support of established programs and services, campaigns and special projects, crisis communications and new strategic initiatives. This position must demonstrate superior writing skills, project management abilities, relationship management and interpersonal communication skills. They must be able to take complicated topics and simplify them with clarity and brevity for general audience consumption and understanding, with appreciation for audience reception and action.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee strategy for and execution of organizational earned media plans
  • Manage media lists, pitch calendars and related tactical elements
  • Prepare and train senior leaders for externally facing audiences and opportunities


  • Collaborate with Director of Communications on rollout of new strategies, company announcements and messages from senior leadership including message creation; draft talking points and Q&A documents
  • Support teams in crafting program and campaign message strategy and executional elements.
  • Assist with crisis communications messages, talking points and Q&A documents designed to maintain a favorable public image for the organization.
  • Manage organizational and individual thought leadership strategies, with support from external agency partners, including writing and pitching op-ed articles, blog posts, etc.
  • Provide high-level writing for communicating new strategic initiatives to external audiences
  • Foster new and maintain existing relationships with local and national media
  • Collaboratively own organization Editorial and Storytelling Style Guide and ensure adherence.
  • Craft and distribute quarterly organizational topline messages for

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • All relevant experience including work, education, transferable skills, and military experience will be considered.
  • 5+ years leading earned media strategy
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience
  • Experience advising and training executive leadership
  • Superior writing skills and ability to synthesize information from various external and senior level sources.
  • Superior planning and project management skills
  • Ability to work across team boundaries to get information and keep the project moving.
  • Self-directed and able to move work forward with little supervision
  • Comfortable with ambiguous situations or goals, with the ability to organize a plan and implement a solution.
  • Strong editing skills and comfort operating within brand guidelines
  • Strong interviewing and listening skills
  • Microsoft Office and Power-point presentation skills
  • Demonstrated exceptional relationship building skills
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Microsoft Office, Office 365, and the ability to learn other computer software programs.
  • Ability to work with flexibility, efficiency, and enthusiasm, both individually and as part of a team in a fast-paced, high-demand environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, manage and follow through on multiple daily tasks and projects.
  • Preferred experience with the role social media and online marketing play in building community support and raising funds for a non-profit
