McClatchy
News Intern - Belleville News-Democrat
McClatchy, Belleville, Illinois, 62226
Join us in the summer as a paid intern to gain practical education and professional experience, and have a great time working alongside reporters in our newsroom. You'll leave with clips that will help you get a job in the field. The News-Democrat is one of 30 news organizations in the McClatchy Company. We're located in southwestern Illinois, just minutes from downtown St. Louis, Missouri and, through bnd.com, our app, and a printed edition, remain the dominant source of news information for the roughly half-million residents of the metro-east. The BND is focused on enterprising watchdog reporting that holds public officials to account in our local government, schools, law enforcement and other important institutions. We also engage with our readers in fun ways with polls, features and information that helps them live their best, metro-east lives. The summer internship/core mission: Our goals are many. First is to educate and train aspiring journalists in the principles and rigors of their desired profession. Second is to bring new voices to our newsroom to give us fresh perspectives. Third is to put you to work - you will break news, write follow-up stories, interview sources, search public records, shoot photos and make videos. Our interns are vital and we value them. The program works this way: Internships are 6-8 weeks, 40 hours per week. Qualifications include: The ability to write quickly, accurately and well; Solid news judgment; Drive, with an instinctive grasp of what will engage an audience; A deep grasp of what drives interest on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms; A strong entrepreneurial spirit, curiosity and high energy; A collaborative style; Comfort with shooting photos; A minimum of two years of college completed, preferably working toward a journalism major. The anticipated base pay range for this position is $15 per hour. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, department equity and relevant education. Schedule could include weekend hours. Interns learn how to cover local news, features and business both quickly and deeply. To apply: Submit resume and samples to the application link. Include links to stories, personal websites, resume, and portfolio, if available. (For the purposes of uploading, these links can be placed on a word or pdf document.) Deadline: Dec. 31, 2024.
