Position Summary

SeamonWhiteside is in search of an ambitious and talented professional to serve as a Civil Designer I in our growing Charlotte, NC office.

SW+ is seeking a Civil Designer I who will focus on the fundamentals of land surveying as well as SW+ general standards. The Civil Designer I will focus on learning the fundamentals of civil design as well as SW+ design, computer, and general office standards. This role contributes and supports the engineering team in master planning, engineering design, and research for specific tasks on projects.

The Civil Designer I is expected to learn necessary drafting, design, and research skills to assist the engineers and project managers in the analysis of proposed and current projects. This position is encouraged to ask many questions and seek mentorship to better understand and analyze plan presentation, reliability, engineering design, project scopes and delivery timelines.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements

Education:

Bachelor's or associate's degree in civil engineering from an accredited college/university preferred

Experience:

Minimum 2 years CAD Tech experience, previous Civil Engineering internship experience with a Civil Engineering design firm, and/or AutoCAD certification required

Key Responsibilities
  • Attend pre-construction meetings and site visits with senior CA personnel
  • Witness installation, testing and inspections of site infrastructure systems (sewer/water systems testing, proof rolls, SWPP inspections, etc.)
  • Assist in the review of shop drawings and material submittals on projects
  • Assist senior engineer staff in problem solving and troubleshooting issues in the field
  • Assist in the review as-built of civil engineering systems
  • Meet SW+ billable goals
  • Work to develop the understanding and knowledge of civil design as well as SW+ design, computer, general office standards
  • Work to develop knowledge of design software (ICPR, WaterCAD, Civil3D, SEDCAD, HEC-RAS, Hydraflow Express, storm sewers, microstation, Geopak, InRoads, IDEAL model)
  • Contributes and support the engineering team in master planning, engineering design, and research for specific task on projects
  • Prepare CAD base sheet drawings from drawing files provided by Surveyor
  • Prepare civil plan sheet sets for construction drawings with emphasis on proper plan presentation
  • Perform quantity take-offs and cost estimates of designs
  • Perform hydraulic system calculations, pipe design calculations and engineering, reports (drainage report, watercalc reports, and project narratives)
  • Address redline comments provided by agencies and senior engineering staff. Learning QA/QC process
  • Seek mentorship on analyzing plan presentation, reliability, engineering design, project scopes and delivery timelines
Desired Skills:
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT)/ Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) registration preferred
  • A strong desire for continuous professional and personal development and improvement
  • Ability to work independently to effectively manage time and work in a team environment
  • Proficiency in a wide variety of software programs including Microsoft Office
  • Basic knowledge of Civil Engineering Design (Preliminary Plats, SWPPP, Grading, Drainage, Water, and Sewer Systems)
  • Ability to read and understand Civil and Landscape drawings
  • A valid driver's license
