PORT TOWNSEND SCHOOL DISTRICT Human Resources-Job Posting Position Opening Announcement: Library Supervision General/Instructional Paraeducator 6.5 Hr/Day, Blue Heron Middle Schoo 2024-25 School Year Position begins February 24, 2025 Posting Date: December 5, 2024 Posting No. 2024-68 Applicants must meet the "Every Student Succeeds Act" highly qualified requirement through two years of college, or an Associate's degree or higher; or have passed the ParaPro Assessment Test. This position is subject to the SEIU Collective Bargaining Agreement. Summary Library paraeducators are persons trained and skilled in the areas of technical services who provide support to the District Librarian in maintaining the efficient operation of Port Townsend School District Library Media Centers. The library paraeducator has the ability to work independently and manage continual interruptions and shifting job priorities. They should possess excellent word processing and database skills, as well as a strong interest in working with students and the public. The library paraeducator is responsible through the District Librarian to the school principal. Qualifications Experience working with and supervising middle and high school students Enthusiasm for books, literacy, and fostering a love of reading in students Familiarity with children's, middle school and high school literature Prior experience working in a library and educational setting (preferred) Familiarity with organization of library systems, including confidence in using Dewey Decimal system to find and shelve books and assist students in finding books Interest in learning collection development basics, collection development policy and working with the District Librarian in building collections at the school library Knowledge and experience with project-based and place-based learning Good attendance is essential Ability to maintain a friendly, inviting and productive atmosphere for students and faculty Ability to run a variety of technology equipment, including Chromebooks, laptops, digital screens, and problem-solve difficulties for staff, students and families Ability to collaborate and contribute in a team and take direction from District Librarian Demonstration of good basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics Good communication and time management skills Strong attention to detail for organizing collections, databases, lists and records Skills in word processing, databases, and digital file management Ability to supervise large groups of students Ability to lift boxes of books up to 50 pounds Demonstrated ability to work well independently amidst shifting priorities and frequent interruptions Interest and willingness to to assist the District librarian in creating a positive culture of inclusion for all Responsibilities Under the direction of the District Librarian, the library paraeducator is responsible for: Management of the circulation desk and carrying out established procedures for using the Polaris Library database and check out system. Prepare and distribute overdue notices Update student records, add new students into Polaris Database Troubleshoot student patron account issues Issue new library cards to incoming students Stay up-to-date in Polaris ILS changes and usage guidelines Maintains confidentiality of student and staff records Collaborates with public library partners to remedy student fines and fees Supervision and upkeep of library shelves and reserve collections Work with consortium libraries to pull materials on hold and distribute in timely manner. Shelve and retrieve materials Set up reserve collection for classes/teachers Keep shelves clean and orderly Preparation and processing of materials for circulation Catalog materials into Polaris Integrated Library System for the PT Schools Libraries Process and shelve new materials Collaborate with District Librarian when issues arise during cataloging and processing Annually weed and inventory books based on Collection Development Procedures Contribution to lists of materials (e.g., books, periodicals and databases) for purchase consideration using collection development criteria and student/staff interest Direction and supervision of adult and student volunteers to help carry out certain library tasks Guidance for students and faculty in the use of the library resources: online catalog, location of items in the collection, databases, library websites, applications on computers, and multimedia equipment. Instruct students and staff in how to use online catalog to find materials in collection Learn new databases and applications as they become integral in the library Maintenance of requested materials: Update records and notify requestor when materials are in or ready to circulate Maintenance of incoming resources: Help keep invoices organized and verify invoices against shipments and orders Distribution of promotional materials and notices to students and staff, as well as contribute to displays and special projects Collaboration with the District Librarian in realm of Reading Advocacy Collaboration with IT Department in checking out devices to students, staff and classrooms and organizing technology supplies for the school community Supervision of students during early morning open library time and lunch open library times: Maintain a safe, friendly, and cooperative atmosphere for the school community Guidance to students in learning library procedures (use of passes, signing into library, no food or beverages, respectful behavior, etc.) Communication and collaboration with District Librarian on library topics and concerns, projects and special collections and other related duties that may be assigned by the District Librarian Other duties as assigned by the building administration Applications for this position will be accepted until filled.
