About The Department

The College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a Lab Associate in the Ceramics Lab, this is a full-time hourly position. The ceramics lab is a 6200 square foot facility with hand building, wheel throwing, and casting processes. Students learn how to safely use its specialized equipment and navigate within the ecosystem of the facility and its collaborative learning environment. Our goal is to continue to expand the use of this facility so that in addition to a classroom, the space will serve as a research and teaching laboratory for students and faculty from across the university. Job Overview

The position of Lab Associate will be the key support role for the ceramics lab as a core teaching and research facility. In addition to duties listed below, the Lab Associate will facilitate workshops, tutorials, and facility orientations including health and safety training for students and faculty from other schools within DAAP and the UC community. Evening and weekend hours may occasionally be required.

Essential Functions

* Guide students, faculty, and staff in the safe and proper use of ceramics tools, equipment, and materials (e.g., hand-building, wheel throwing, kiln firing, mold making, slip casting etc..). * Demonstrate studio procedures, provide technical advice, and facilitate workshops for the UC community and public. * Manage the studio schedule for classes, workshops, open hours, and kiln firings * Conduct routine maintenance and repairs of equipment related to the ceramics lab * Ensure safety compliance, including hazardous waste disposal in coordination with Environmental Health & Safety. * Facilitate hiring, training and management of student staff, including part time student workers, and co-ops. * Work cohesively with other lab staff and faculty * Track and manage lab revenue and expenses including equipment acquisition, maintenance, and staffing budget. * Maintain inventory of related consumables for the ceramics lab. May submit purchase orders to replenish materials and supplies. * Develop, maintain, and enforce standard operating procedures in compliance with OSHA and EHS policies. Train users on appropriate policies and procedures * Perform related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time.

Required Education

* Associate's Degree. * Three (3) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Experience

One (1) year of experience in an area of technical specialty.
