The journal Life Science Alliance is offering an opportunity to join its editorial team in the role of Assistant Editor. Established in 2018, Life Science Alliance (https://www.life-science-alliance.org) is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal founded by partnership of three not-for-profit publishers: Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press, Rockefeller University Press, and EMBO Press. The journal is committed to rapid, fair, and transparent publication of valuable research in a wide range of cellular and molecular biology. Life Science Alliance is integrated into an innovative manuscript transfer network with nine research journals published by the Alliance partners. It also accepts direct submissions.

Position Responsibilities

The Assistant Editor of Life Science Alliance works in collaboration with the journal’s internationally distributed Executive Editor and Academic Editors to evaluate and select research papers in a broad range of biomolecular research areas.

As Assistant Editor, your specific responsibilities will include:

  • Critical evaluation of submitted manuscripts and identification of suitable reviewers
  • Interpretation of reviewer reports and author responses and, together with the Executive Editor and Academic Editors, decision-making on the publication, revision or rejection of research manuscripts offered to the journal
  • Communication with authors about editorial decisions
  • Attendance at meetings with journal colleagues, including other editors and the directors of Life Science Alliance
  • Representing the journal at conferences and on campus visits
  • Participation in strategic planning for the journal’s continued growth
  • Assisting with activities that promote awareness of the journal and encourage submissions.

Your role will involve occasional travel and some evening and weekend work as required to maintain publication schedules and communication with authors. Working from a location in New York City is a possibility.

 

Position Requirements

The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. in experimental biological science, and ideally postdoctoral experience.  A commitment to fair, rigorous assessment of research with integrity and transparency and broad interests in biomedical and life sciences are necessary. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, organizational and interpersonal skills, the ability to multitask and prioritize, and willingness to follow guidelines while working autonomously are all essential. Experience in journal publishing and/or the evaluation of research would be a significant advantage.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range and/or hourly rate listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation that may be offered to a successful applicant for this position at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future. When determining a base salary and/or rate, several factors may be considered as applicable (e.g., years of relevant experience, education, credentials, and internal equity).
