Job Duties
The SEM Instructor position teaches multiple, one-credit first- and second year seminar courses and provides academic and guided pathway assistance to students. SEM course sections may be integrated with at least one other course in the first year learning communities program. The SEM instructor will also provide assistance with activities that involve collaborations between Student Pathways and Academic Formation and other university departments and programs. Duties and responsibilities of the Spartan Seminar Series Instructor include those related to successful implementation of initiative(s) outlined below but limited to:
1. Teaching multiple sections of Spartan Seminars 101, 102, and/or 201.
2. Developing and delivering instructions that engage first and second year students in academic program and learning community activities.
3. Assessing and analyzing students' progress in SEM courses.
4. Providing guidance to assist students with their academic, social, and personal growth.
5. Collaborating with academic advisors to assist with a successful transition to the University.
6. Collaborating with learning community liaison and faculty coordinators to integrate learning community experiences.
7. Assisting student with establishing academic and career goals during the first and second years.
8. Assisting with planning and promoting department events and activities for first and second year students to include workshops, social gatherings, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Master's or terminal degree; preferably in science and technology, liberal arts, business, education, and social work academic programs.
2. Considerable knowledge of the mission of colleges/universities, Norfolk State University in particular.
3. Considerable knowledge of career support services and organization (on and off campus).
4. Considerable knowledge of first and second year transitions and experiences.
5. Considerable knowledge of Blackboard usage.
6. Considerable organization and time management skills.
7. Considerable written and verbal communication skills.
8. Demonstrated ability to work productively with student, faculty, staff, alumni, and employer/industry partners.
9. Demonstrated ability to orchestrate activities according to plan.
10. Demonstrated ability to work independently.
11. Demonstrated ability to effectively communication and expression of complex ideas-verbal and written.
12. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Work and Excel).
Preferred Qualifications 1. Post-secondary teaching experience and first-year teaching experience students preferred.
13. Activity coordination.
14. Working in industry as a professional (non-academic).
