POSITION DESCRIPTION The University of California, Santa Barbara, is one of ten campuses that comprise the University of California system. The University of California, Santa Barbara Library seeks an innovative, strategic, forward-thinking professional for an exciting opportunity to serve as a Research & Engagement Librarian in Humanities & Social Sciences. Reporting to the Director of Research & Engagement, the position will be a member of the Research & Engagement department and part of the Subject Librarian Program. The incumbent will proactively promote and provide research services, course-integrated information literacy instruction, and instructional workshops in multiple modalities to faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students in the Humanities and Social Science departments assigned to this position. Together with colleagues across the Library, the Research & Engagement Librarian will be actively involved in envisioning and shaping new approaches to how the Library supports open research principles, tools, and practices in the Humanities & Social Sciences disciplines at UCSB. They will facilitate open research on campus by identifying strategic opportunities to maximize scholarly impact and support the visibility and discoverability of research at UCSB. Emphasis will be on supporting humanities and social science scholars with research information management, bibliometrics, persistent identifiers (e.g. ORCID and ROR IDs), digital scholarship, open access publishing, and open data. As a member of the Research & Engagement team, the incumbent will identify and assess structural and programmatic opportunities across campus and research lifecycles. They will be actively involved in the strategic architecting of the Research & Engagement department and the Subject Librarian Program, and in the innovative transformation of services to meet the emerging needs of campus in an ever-evolving research and learning landscape. This position is eligible for a flexible work arrangement that includes a combination of onsite and remote work. Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. RESPONSIBILITIES Proactively promotes and provides research support services to faculty and students in assigned Humanities & Social Sciences departments Designs and teaches course-integrated library instruction, with an emphasis on open research tools and practices. Works with assigned academic departments to incorporate sustainable and scalable instruction into the curriculum Collaborates with colleagues in other Library departments (Research Data Services, DREAM Lab, Collection Strategies) to identify open research structural and programmatic, service, and project opportunities across campus to support evolving needs in conducting digital scholarship In collaboration with librarians across the Library, strategizes and coordinates efforts to increase ORCID adoptions and integrations in the humanities and social sciences Actively collaborates with the Research & Engagement team to anticipate opportunities on campus and research lifecycles, to be able to design, implement, and assess strategies, services, and programs Follows developments in open research and scholarship in the digital tools used in humanities and social sciences, shares trends and patterns, coordinates learning opportunities, and provides expertise to the Subject Librarian Program Participates in professional development activities as appropriate to meet both individual and departmental goals and objectives QUALIFICATIONS Basic qualifications (required at time of application) Master’s degree in library/information science (ALA-accreditation) OR another relevant advanced degree Additional qualifications (required at time of start) Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by submitted materials including the CV, Cover Letter, and optional statement of contributions to diversity. Demonstrated knowledge of open research principles, tools, practices, and trends Preferred qualifications At least two years of relevant experience in an academic research environment or related setting. Strong skills in innovative and strategic thinking. Experience identifying and initiating programmatic opportunities and initiatives. Strong advocacy and promotion skills demonstrated by experience working effectively across organizational boundaries and with diverse stakeholder groups. Experience with project management, process improvement approaches (e.g. Lean Six Sigma). Experience with digital identifiers (e.g. ORCID), scholarly communications, bibliometric data sources (e.g. Web of Science, Google Scholar) and researcher identification and profiling systems and tools and their issues. Familiarity with data management practices and tools in digital humanities and social sciences. Strong assessment and data analysis skills; proven ability to gather, assess, interpret, and present quantitative and qualitative data for varied audiences. Demonstrated organizational skills sufficient to balance multiple priorities, deadlines, and changing project parameters. Experience providing research support and instructional services. Aptitude for learning and adapting emerging technologies. Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and culturally diverse environment.
