Job Title: Graphic Designer

Division: Marketing

Supervisor: Director of Marketing and Communication

Hours: Full-Time


Job Summary:

Demonstrates a thorough understanding of branding and graphic design, in order to attract prospective students to Bethel University and to engage potential donors. This person will work with vendors and the college admission and advancement offices to effectively promote and market Bethel University and its programs.

Essential Functions:

  • Fulfill the design needs for all approved external Bethel pieces, primarily serving the Office of Enrollment, Office of Institutional Advancement, and the President's Office. This includes print and digital materials, campus signage, promotional items, display banners, etc.
  • Work closely with faculty, staff and students to present a positive Bethel University image through assisting in managing the Bethel brand, including making necessary updates to the brand manual and style guide.
  • Work closely with vendors to communicate visual standards and brand style guide, and ensure adherence to the Bethel brand.
  • Assist in determining expectations for vendors and developing/managing a system to track their progress and outcomes.
  • Work with Project Manager to ensure that campus clients receive appropriate communication about their projects and that all project procedures are followed.
  • Work with Director of Web Strategy to develop graphics and design elements to communicate key messages on Bethel's website.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry design standards and keep track of trends within the higher education marketing sector.
  • Assist the Project Manager in setting deadlines for proofs, revisions and printing.
  • Create branded templates and assist in managing administrative tasks as needed.
  • Assist in providing visual direction for photo shoots.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Solid oral and written communication skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, communications, journalism or marketing.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in graphic design (preferably in a marketing or communications setting).
  • Thorough knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (fluency in InDesign, Illustrator, PhotoShop)
  • Ability to edit with attention to detail.
  • Ability to be creative, innovative, resourceful and adaptive to change.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.

Ability to function/interact with all divisions of the university.

In recent years, Bethel saw the strongest series of financial ratios in 25 years (as defined by the U.S. Department of Education), increased admissions visits by 60% and applications by 20%, doubled the number of fully online students and saw surges in programs like Math-Engineering (+24%), Christian Ministries (+53%), Biology (+118%), Kinesiology/Pre-Physical Therapy/Sport Management (+177%), and total Graduate Program increases of +47%. Students of color moved from 19% to 28% of the total population, with increases in retention and graduation rates.

Traditional college-age students now rank mentoring as one of the most prominent traits of the environment, seen in part by a shift from 5 in 10 to 7 in 10 residential students voluntarily engaged in small group or one-on-one coaching by faculty-staff, and through alumni surveys showing very high faith-integration retention after their Bethel years (e.g. understanding Biblical texts, feeling equipped for the essential questions of life, strong critical thinking skills, etc.).

Also during this time, $12M was applied to endowment, scholarships, and facility upgrades such as Academic Support Services Center, School of Nursing Simulation Lab, renewal of the largest lecture hall named for Brian & Paqui Kelly (Notre Dame head football coach), new entrances for the East campus and Athletic Park with three additional intramural fields, a new Softball stadium, and refreshed Weight Room, added a Kindergarten Lab School, refreshed Art Gallery, Acorn restaurant, Wi-Fi network and phone systems, and more.
