POSITION TITLE: LIBRARY CLERK
CLASS DEFINITION:
Positions within this class are characterized by having as their primary assignment clerical duties within an office or library setting. Under general supervision, these positions perform duties that are generally specific and routine in nature and include maintaining resources, filling out standard forms, keeping records and performing mathematical calculations, including the handling of money. The clerk classification is generally under the lead of a school secretary or department manager in school site settings, but is evaluated by the administrator. At the central services level, the clerk classification is generally given to positions which are under the lead of a department head. Levels within this class are differentiated by virtue of the level of skills required, the degree of independence expected of the position, and the level of education and experience or training required to perform the specifications of the assignment.
POSITION DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, to do a variety of clerical work involving numerous specific routines, and standard policies and procedures related to the operation of a library and providing support services to the classroom teacher, and do related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
•Prepare and check materials for shelf use
•Type and file book and catalog cards
•Check library materials in and out
•Maintain and process circulation files
•Send overdue book notices to students
•Repair books
•Provide routine information
•File and make entries to records
•Operate standard office machines
•Keep simple financial records, and collect and deposit fines and replacement fees
•Assist students and faculty in locating materials
•Assist in the instruction of students and faculty including library skills, library orientation and story time
•Requisition supplies, equipment and services
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Education and Experience - Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school including or supplemented by courses in typing and office practices, and one year of related experience, preferably in a library or school.
Knowledge and Abilities - Knowledge of modern office practices; knowledge of library filing procedures; ability to communicate pleasantly and effectively with students, teachers, parents and other adults; ability to type at the speed of not less than 40 net words per minute; ability to operate standard office equipment; ability to write legibly and to make simple arithmetic calculations accurately; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and to follow written and oral instructions.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Visual capability to read handwritten or typed documents, and the display screen of various office equipment and machines
Able to conduct verbal conversation in English and other designated languages
Able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels)
Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, walk
Able to stand in one space for sustained periods
Able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently
Able to push and pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds
Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder external rotation and internal rotation
Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder abduction and adduction
Able to exhibit full range of motion for elbow flexion and extension
Able to exhibit full range of motion for back flexion
Able to exhibit full range of motion for hip flexion and extension
Able to exhibit full range of motion for knee flexion
Able to exhibit manual dexterity needed to operate a computer and other classroom and office equipment
