As the Manager - Public Relations, you will play a key role in creating visibility, authority and love for the Michaels brand. Your key objective will be building positive brand reputation and increased awareness for Michaels and MakerPlace by Michaels through proactive public relations programs and campaigns. You will drive strategy, planning and execution of corporate and consumer PR programs for Michaels and MakerPlace by Michaels, leading a team of internal and external agency support.
This is a hands-on role that requires delegation and coaching skills as well as the ability and desire to execute alongside direct reports and external resources. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader, an exceptional writer and a creative storyteller who excels at spotting trends, using data to create news and getting ahead of the narrative.
Major Activities
Oversee national, regional, and local media relations across business, trade, lifestyle and consumer publications, including seasonal campaigns. Direct multi-channel external communications strategies, serving as a corporate spokesperson and tier-1 contact for national media. Elevate brand awareness and corporate reputation by managing key media and speaking opportunities to amplify thought leadership and support business transformation initiatives. Serve as the main point of contact for external media requests/inquiries. Drive integrated marketing efforts in collaboration with Brand Marketing and cross-functional business leaders. Manage the planning and budgeting process in partnership with the Head of Communications. Prepare and staff executive leadership interviews, meetings and speaking opportunities. Create and present campaign reports and recaps to share objectives and key results with internal stakeholders and leaders. Other duties as assigned - Leave room for serendipity and new brand partnerships or help with crucial business needs as necessary. Directly manage team: Public Relations Specialist and multiple PR agency partners. Other duties as assigned
Preferred Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree or equivalent Public Relations, Communication, and Marketing focus preferred Microsoft Office Suite Excellent PowerPoint skills Minimum Type of Experience Required
7+ years of retail/agency/in-house PR/corporate communications experience. Exceptional media relations skills with proven experience in positive results. Communication experience in large, multi-store retail or service organization. Other
Possess the four P's: professionalism, positivity, proactivity, and productivity in your role and as a member of the team. Superior writing skills and experience writing all types of external communications. Demonstrated success in the development, alignment, and deployment of business and communications strategy. Expertise in both traditional and emerging media and communications. Relationship management with media, external agencies and business partners. Creative problem-solving skills. Issues/Crisis management experience. Strong project management skills. High motivation and results-driven mentality. Some travel is required.
