Summary

The Pathways Recent Graduates Program affords developmental experiences in the Federal Government intended to promote possible careers in the civil service to individuals who have recently graduated from qualifying educational institutions or programs. To be eligible, applicants must apply within two years of degree or certificate completion (except for veterans precluded from doing so due to their military service obligation, who will have up to six years after degree completion to apply).

Duties

As a Interior Design and Space Planning Specialist (Recent Graduate), your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:
  • Workes with vendors, service providers, furniture manufacturers, and other interior design partners to choose fabrics, furniture, floor coverings, upholstery and other design items.
  • Assists with interior design initiatives. This includes site surveys, space planning, meetings and presentations, moves, and installations.
  • Assists in sourcing and research requirements for design initiatives and purchases.
  • Assists in the management and organization of the FMD Design Library.
  • Provides space redesign/set-up and move coordination support to customers.
  • Collaborates with EOP stakeholders and customers.
  • Creates interior design and space planning options using AutoCAD to meet customers space needs
  • Safeguards and maintains the OA Asset Management Inventory to include all EOP-owned and loaned historical artifacts, works of art, and historical assets.

Qualifications

To be eligible for the Recent Graduate Program, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

A. Completed all requirements for an associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational, or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution within the previous two years;

OR

B. Released or discharged from active duty within the previous two years, where the applicant is a veteran who, due to a military service obligation, was precluded from applying for a recent graduate position during any portion of the two-year eligibility period following completion of his/her degree or certificate requirements, provided that not more than six years have transpired since the applicant completed the requirements for his/her degree or certificate.

AND

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study interior design or other field that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in interior design, interior architecture, or interior environmental design; or passage of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination.
-OR-
  • Identifying, researching, and creatively solving problems pertaining to the function and quality of the interior environment.
  • Performing services relative to interior spaces, including programming, design analysis, space planning and aesthetics, using specialized knowledge of interior construction, building systems and components, building codes, equipment, materials, and furnishings.
  • Preparing drawings and documents relative to the design of interior spaces in order to enhance and protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public.
  • Coordinating and integrating the mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering disciplines within the interior context.
  • Managing projects, developing cost estimates, evaluating bid proposals, reviewing construction documents, participating in on-site construction visits, conducting pre- and post-occupancy evaluations, developing standards for efficient space management, etc.
AND

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility comparable to the next lower grade or comparable pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector. Examples of specialized experience are:

You may qualify at the GS-07 level, if you meet the following minimum qualification requirement: Applicants must have a minimum of one year (52 weeks) of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal Service, obtained in either the private or public sector, which includes: 1. Utilizing AutoCAD to meet customers' needs 2. Researching requirements for design initiatives and purchases.

OR

SUPERIOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT: Must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. S.A.A. is based on (1) Class standing-applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class, based on completed courses; or (2) Grade-Point Average-applicants must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (3) Election to membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society - membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision.

OR

A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience. (Combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements as specified above. May be computed by first determining the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.)

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service program (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Additional information

If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.

You will be in a trial period throughout your entire Pathways Internship appointment. If selected by management, you are required to complete a Declaration for Federal Employment (OF-306) to determine your suitability for federal employment and to authorize a background investigation.

This is an Excepted Service appointment. To be eligible for conversion to the competitive service, the Recent Graduate must: be a U.S. citizen; successfully complete all Recent Graduate Program requirements; meet the OPM Qualification Standard for the position to which the Recent Graduate may be converted to; and maintain acceptable performance under the agency's approved performance management system.
