Job Description
The New York Times is looking for a video leader with experience in digital video journalism and post-production to lead our effort to produce podcast videos across our portfolio of newsroom audio shows.
The Executive Producer will oversee the editorial, production, and stylistic components of our podcast videos, and – in collaboration with audio producers and editors – help shape the video identity of Times Newsroom Audio. You will manage a team tasked with planning, shooting, editing and publishing our work to mobile, social and digital audiences.
You are a strong manager with a background in news and a deep understanding of podcast video production and post-production. You will help structure and shape the reporting and storytelling, conceive of fresh visual executions and give notes on edits to create impactful video. You understand social video trends and take an innovative and adaptive approach to video formats and techniques.
The Executive Producer will be the guardian of excellence for visual storytelling, both in terms of journalistic excellence and technical decision making. You must see collaboration as central to your work, and will provide strategic guidance on how to visualize stories, working closely with producers, reporters, cinematographers and editors to support our creative vision.
This is a hybrid position based in New York City or Washington, DC and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.
Responsibilities
- Manage video production and video journalists for Times Audio Newsroom shows
- Manage shoot, edit and publishing schedules and deadlines
- Guide editorial decisions for podcast video, and ensure our work embodies newsroom standards
- Assist in establishing the visual concept behind our audio video portfolio and communicating and collaborating on the vision with audio producers, editors and audience team members
- Collaborate with production teams to develop story ideas into visual treatments and shot lists
- Hire, coordinate and assign freelancers when needed
- Coordinate studio shoots and advise on visual style
- Make effective budgetary recommendations for equipment purchases with future proofing and aesthetics in mind
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
- This role reports to the Director of Video
Basic Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in video journalism
- 5+ years of management experience
- News judgment and experience working on breaking news
- Excellent writing, editing, filming and communication skills
- Broad knowledge of current events, news and culture
- Deep understanding of social media and video trends
- Proven experience working with art directors and production crews, and existing relationships with a roster of freelance talent
- Experience with studio shooting and lighting
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong leadership and mentorship skills
- Experience working with video podcasts
- Strong communication and diplomatic skills; can articulate what success looks like and can bring stakeholders and partners together around strategic goals.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including giving feedback clearly and effectively
- Details-oriented manager of editorial workflows, staffers and storylines
- Able to meet and make quick decisions under deadlines and to adapt to change in a daily, unpredictable news environment
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule
The annual base pay range for this role is between $180,000.00 and $200,000.00.
