Deputy Director of Marketing & Audience Development This is an exciting time for a new Deputy Director to join the Blanton. In recent years the museum has grown and expanded its offerings, built a strong brand with a friendly institutional voice, redeveloped and enhanced the museum’s grounds and gallery experiences, and continued to elevate its nationally recognized exhibition program.The Deputy Director will build upon this groundwork to create and oversee efforts that engage audiences, grow visitation, increase the museum's profile, and significantly increase revenue from admission, membership and donor support. This position is located at the University of Texas at Austin campus in Austin, Texas and reports to the Director of the Blanton Museum of Arts. The Deputy Director of Marketing and Audience Development is responsible for amplifying the Blanton brand, cultivating new audiences, and increasing revenue. Oversee and supervise departments related to museum external affairs; specifically marketing and communications, public relations, visitor and volunteer services, and public programs. Lead, coach, and build a data-driven team focused on marketing, design, communications, programming, and visitor experience.Establish team and individual goals, set departmental budgets, and monitor and support team performance. Provide leadership for creative team, social media efforts. and website content and creation. Serve as a key member of senior management team, working closely with the Museum Director and museum colleagues on digital initiatives, creating and implementing effective and proactive marketing and communication strategies and visitor engagement strategies with a focus on expanding audience and donor and membership bases, increasing revenue, strengthening the organization's voice and increasing its impact. Embrace and model inclusive leadership and collaboration, and actively contribute to the senior leadership team's focus as an active thought partner to further the Blanton’s commitment to engaging Austinites and Texans with the visual arts and continuing to promote the museum for local, national, and international tourism. Develop and execute programs for target visitor segments designed to increase earned revenue and work in close collaboration with Finance to identify and manage revenue growth opportunities as well as risks that might prevent growth and goal performance. Embrace and resolve big challenges with energy, drive, and dedication in a fast-paced and growing environment. Grow the organization's brand to the broadest possible array of stakeholders through a combination of digital content, effective use of media, public relations, and other tools and channels, with an eye toward brand integrity and consistency. Oversee the museum’s strategic institutional communications to board members and other major constituencies, along with museum communications to campus and staff.Serve as liaison with University’s communications department for all campus communication efforts and responses. Set benchmarks for success by gathering internal input and identifying relevant external research and industry standards. Key Functions Responsible for data-driven audience development, planning and oversight of visitor experience, and public program development and expansion; includes oversight of the activities of revenue-generating units: group sales, general sales, and other growth opportunities with the goal of increasing revenue. Leverage data, market research, and industry knowledge to forecast revenue for areas of oversight. In collaboration with Development and Membership team, develop and support programs and strategies designed to increase revenue including but not limited to visitor loyalty, member retention, moving single ticket buyers to members; and moving members along the continuum to donors. Develop and implement institutional surveys to understand visitor volume and use patterns; share and integrate findings throughout the organization to inform planning, operations, marketing, and fundraising strategies. Monitor progress towards revenue and online sales goals and adjust strategy and forecasts in accordance with progress. Leverage marketing and communications strategies, including digital, data-driven, paid, and organic, to ensure engagement with key audiences: visitors, members, groups, donors, sponsors, and community members to position the Blanton as a museum leader and maximize revenue. Hire and manage agencies/consultants as needed to execute media and PR campaigns in a cost-effective manner and according to University purchasing guidelines. Identify, track, and analyze visitation performance metrics to maximize effectiveness and track return on investment. Oversee communications strategy to secure media coverage for the Blanton, its programs and people. In collaboration with museum director, and curatorial and operations teams, guide the development of public programs and experiences that engage the Austin and central Texas community’s visual arts scene in creative and extraordinary ways. Ensure that strategic institutional priorities are represented in high-performance operations, and that the institution's strategic priorities are informed by operational realities. Collaborate across departments to bring a customer-centric perspective to operational and strategic planning. Ensure operational excellence within the departments by providing oversight, and proactively identifying opportunities to enhance the experience and mission delivery. Serve as a key point of contact to various other departments on campus and in the community related to Blanton external affairs. Candidate Requirements Bachelor’s degree in marketing, advertising, communications, public relations, or other related field. Minimum of ten years of experience leading and managing a comprehensive strategic marketing and business development function, with a track record of leveraging digital resources to drive revenue and promote an organization's mission and goals with the widest set of stakeholders possible. Expertise overseeing and developing websites, social media and other digital assets, and in producing marketing campaigns, and leveraging social media, earned media to grow audience, engage customers, and elevate institutional profile. Relevant experience in analytics critical to monitoring progress towards goals and communications success; familiarity with Google Analytics or similar tools. Proven leadership with imagination and a passion for the Blanton’s mission and core values. Ability to thrive in a complex organization with the capacity to make decisions and anticipate future needs in a changing environment; experience leading and managing through change. Excellent judgment and creative thinking skills deployed in the service of developing new solutions and approaches to difficult problems, along with a track record of translating ideas into action plans and results. Collaborative approach to work and a demonstrated capacity to work with diverse stakeholders across all levels. Demonstrated experience in recruiting, developing, supervising, and retaining a highly performing team. Strong interpersonal skills and exceptional communication and presentation skills, both written and spoken, with an ability to inform, influence, convince, and persuade Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree or equivalent in a job-related field. Prior experience in a senior leadership role, providing strategic oversight for a department or unit. Demonstrated experience in audience development for a museum, an arts-based organization, or comparable institution.
