Job Description:
The Boston Globe seeks an assistant high school sports editor to help expand the scope and reach of its high school sports coverage.
Responsibilities:
+ Work closely with the high school sports editor to plan coverage, publication times and best practices, and distribute content to subscribers and potential subscribers.
+ Set the digital agenda for high school sports coverage by planning and executing the online release of features, including coordinating coverage of events and news stories, editing articles on both a story and grammatical level, and managing audience engagement efforts.
+ Optimize schools stories for search and support best practices for online content.
+ Work with reporters to craft original enterprise features about high school sports that have broad audience appeal, new insight into a compelling topic, or focus on creativity and entertainment to inform existing audiences and attract new audiences.
+ Write high school sports news stories, both through original reporting and rewritten from other sources including social media and news releases. Collaborate with our Express Desk on emerging breaking news stories.
+ Manage live updates features during major events such as Thanksgiving football, high school Super Bowls, and state championship tournaments or meets.
+ Handle digital production of All-Scholastics section three times per school year, and create and manage digital plans for release, audience engagement, and other promotion.
+ Create a comprehensive digital audience engagement plan email and push alerts, social media, other platforms to attract new subscribers.
+ Grow readership on social media platforms with increased frequency and quality of posts, and build a Globe Schools on social platforms not currently in use or those that might emerge.
+ Train and support co-ops and editorial assistants.
+ Regularly generate ideas for unique and compelling stories that appeal to a wide audience and attract new subscribers, including alternate story forms, multimedia presentations, and other story conventions.
Qualifications:
+ 3-5 years experience covering local sports or a related beat.
+ Willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
+ High level of digital journalism expertise and knowledge of the latest trends and best practices in SEO, story forms, and publication timing.
+ Ability to edit stories to make them better while also ensuring they are complete and comprehensive, free of typographical and grammatical errors, and meet expectations.
+ Ability to write creative and accurate headlines.
+ A stickler for details with an eye for spelling errors, inconsistencies, and other mistakes.
+ A self-starter who doesnt need to be told what to work on each day.
+ Confidence in your understanding of what works to reach new consumers and prepared to advocate for new ideas.
+ Experience covering breaking news and sourcing stories quickly. Must know what makes a good story and write clean copy in a timely fashion.
+ Experience growing readership through off-platform initiatives specifically social media, email, and search. Bonus points if the candidate is really good at this, too.
+ Familiarity with the Boston region or willing to dive deep to get to know it.
+ A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.
This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild.
