GENERAL PURPOSE:

Provides reference and computer use assistance to the public at the library's reference desk. Assists patrons with diverse technology tools. Provides outreach to civic leaders, business managers and other community members. Plans and conducts programs for adults. Performs a variety of routine clerical and accounting work to keep official records for the library.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives direct supervision from the Director of Library Services.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Receive visitors, calls, e-mail and other communication and answer questions from library patrons using professional research methods and tools including the online library catalog, TexShare databases, locally licensed databases, materials in the library collection, local reference files and other sources.

Assist patrons with public computer use, fax machine use, WiFi network access and printing.

Assist patrons with technology tools including e-book readers, 3D printer, laser etcher, CNC router, Cricut machine and programmable robots.

Provide outreach to civic leaders, business managers and other community members to encourage reference requests, online database use and search profiles.

Assist with planning and publicizing library programs for adults. Create library promotional materials in print, electronic, social media, digital video and other formats.

Select reference, non-fiction and adult fiction materials for purchase.

Act as a back-up for Circulation staff.

Input data to standard office and department forms; post data to various reports such as annual reports.

Ability to perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Regular and timely attendance is an essential job function.


PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

Compose, type, and edit a variety of correspondence, reports, memoranda, publicity materials and other material requiring judgment as to content, accuracy, and completeness.

Will work some nights and weekends.

Other Duties as assigned.


DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's Degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent; and,

Two (2) years experience in education or libraries.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have valid Texas driver's license.

Must be able to work some nights (until 7:30 pm) and weekends.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Word and Excel, e-mail, and calendar applications;

Knowledge of library practices, procedures and information sources;

Skills to use modern office and audiovisual equipment including, but not limited to computer, scanner, fax machine, digital projector, digital camera, copier, and calculator;

Skills to design and print graphical materials that communicate about library programs;

Ability to learn and explain diverse software, technology tools and research methods.

Ability to effectively meet and deal with the public;

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;

Ability to handle stressful situations;

Ability to understand and follow instructions.


SELECTION GUIDELINES:

Formal application, rating of education and experience, oral interview and reference checks, and job related tests may be required.


TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Telephone; personal computer, including library automation, online databases, word processing and spreadsheet software; copy machine; and fax machine.
