GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Library Associate provides essential support to library operations by delivering high-quality customer service, performing circulation and cataloging tasks, assisting with library programs, and maintaining library collections. This position involves working closely with library staff, volunteers, and patrons to ensure a welcoming and resourceful environment for the community.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED:
Reports to the Library Manager. Provides guidance and training to volunteers as needed. Works independently on assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
All behaviors comply with the City of Caldwell Personnel Policies and Procedures; duties include, but are not limited, to:
- Provides circulation services, including checking materials in and out, managing interlibrary loans, and reconciling the cash drawer.
- Assists patrons with locating materials, answering reference questions, and providing instruction on using the internet, databases, and other computer applications.
- Demonstrates a love of reading and knowledge of authors, titles, and genres to recommend materials to patrons.
- Shelves books and other library materials, maintains an organized collection, and reads shelves to ensure proper placement.
- Prepares books and other materials for checkout and repairs damaged books as needed.
- Operates library computers, copier/scanner/fax machines, and other technical equipment, ensuring equipment is functional and accessible.
- Schedules and coordinates the use of library meeting rooms and library-owned equipment.
- Assists with library programs, events, and classes, including setting up and taking down materials and equipment.
- Trains and guides volunteers in front desk duties to support library operations.
- Serves as part of the cataloging team, assisting in the organization and management of library materials.
- Maintains and updates the front desk calendar to ensure smooth library operations.
- Proctors exams for patrons following established procedures.
- Performs opening and closing duties, ensuring the library is ready for use or secure at the end of the day.
- Performs light custodial duties as needed to maintain a clean and inviting library environment.
- Demonstrates cooperation with library staff and volunteers, contributing to a collaborative and positive workplace.
- Works closely with the Library Manager and Program Specialist on assigned duties and special projects.
- Stays updated on new library software and technologies, with a willingness to learn and adapt to changes.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent; some college coursework preferred.
- Previous customer service experience required; library experience is preferred.
- Must be at least 18 years of age at time of submitting the application for employment
- Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license (or valid within 30 days of employment)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of authors, titles, genres, and a passion for promoting literacy and reading.
- Proficiency in using computers, office equipment, and library-specific software.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a focus on providing exceptional customer service.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while demonstrating initiative and reliability.
- Capability to manage multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic understanding of library operations and cataloging processes, with a willingness to learn more.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and work collaboratively with others.
- Knowledge of Spanish (bi-lingual) highly desirable
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Primarily works indoors in a library setting.
- Requires standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
- May occasionally require evening or weekend shifts to support library programs or events.
