General Information

The Ann Arbor District Library's Public Library Associate program offers paid, practical experience for applicants looking to build their skills and knowledge in an exciting, fast-paced environment. These internships are available to any applicants with relevant skills, interests, and experience. The internships last for one year from date of hire, with an optional second year extension available to interns who excel in their work.

Public Library Associate positions may also qualify for Directed Field Experience credit, with specifics to be arranged between the student and their AADL supervisor and the manager of the Practical Engagement Program (PEP) or equivalent.

Position Summary

AADL has various internship opportunities:

Archives Intern: Work with the Library's Archives team on digitization of newspapers, slides, microfilm, and other publications. Perform research on request and produce content for web features and social media posts. Experience with archives, digitization, and metadata required.

Communications & Marketing Intern: Work with the Library's communications and marketing team to promote Library services, initiatives, and events to the community. Includes social media marketing, traditional marketing, and communications and marketing strategy. Experience with copywriting and social media channels required.

Production Intern: Work with the Library's production team to provide support for technology-intensive live events held by the Library in addition to assisting with the production of content in pursuit of AADL's strategic goals and initiatives. Experience with Audio or Video equipment required.

Youth Services Intern: Work with the Library's youth staff to produce events, provide public service at desks, develop and maintain collections, and produce web content. Experience working with children is required.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications include :
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six or more months of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. (Applicant must be 18 or older unless high school diploma or GED has been obtained.)
  • Classwork, Project experience, or training directly related to the desired internship.
  • Ability to work successfully with diverse patrons of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds.
  • Positive attitude and approach to problem solving, customer service and public service.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organization and planning skills.
  • Maintain a prompt and reliable attendance record.

Preferred Qualifications include :
  • Experience working in a public library.
  • Experience or classwork in reference or research services.
  • Experience contributing content into a Content Management System.
  • Ability to work successfully within a complex organizational structure.
  • Successful and relevant work experience in a public service, software development, or archives setting.
This is a non-union, at-will position.
