Under supervision, the Senior Library Technician performs a wide range of paraprofessional technical and clerical functions primarily in the circulation/reserves area, assisting as needed with patron service and book cataloging, processing, and shelving. Incumbent is responsible for performing work at a high paraprofessional level and expected to exercise independent judgment in the applications of established procedures. Supervision and training of student assistants may be a function of this position.

Duties & Responsibilities

Main circulation area of the Library:
o trains and supervises student assistants
o interviews and recommends students for work in circulation, arranges their work schedules,
and reviews their time cards
o supervises student help engaged in checking library materials in and out, carding and
shelving books, searching shelves for overdue materials, maintaining records on overdues,
maintenance of microfilm and equipment, and keeping of daily library statistics on
attendance and circulation
o gives information to patrons on location and use of materials
o processes requests for setting up reserve materials, including removing materials from
general circulation and setting up appropriate records

Periodical circulation area of the Library:
o trains and supervises student assistants engaged in checking in and out of periodicals and
college catalogs, shelving and retrieving of periodicals, college catalogs and microfilm,
checking for overdue materials, and typing overdue notices, maintaining records on overdues
and typing catalog cards, labels and lists

o interviews and recommends students for work

o assists faculty and library staff with inquiries regarding periodical orders, titles, and
publishers

o initiates all correspondence of claims and problems concerning periodicals

o maintains detailed records of all periodical and microfilm expenditures and encumbrances
and processes bills for payment

o keeps daily library statistics on reference inquiries and makes monthly reports of same

o gives information to patrons on location and use of materials and equipment
•Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Three (3) years of technical library experience or an equivalent combination of training, education and qualifying experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.

2. Applicant must have demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college staff, faculty, and students.

Desirable Qualifications
•Proficiency with a personal computer along with word processing, spreadsheet and database
management software programs (e.g., MS Office Suite, MS Word, Excel and Access).
•Knowledge of the Library of Congress cataloging and filing systems and the new technologies
used in libraries.
•Library Technician's Certificate or Degree.
•Ability to maintain financial and statistical records.
•Experience working with computerized on-line catalogs and with Ameritech Horizon or similar
Library automation software.
•Knowledge of computer hardware and software, including library applications.
•Effective communication and conflict resolution skills.
•Sensitivity and understanding of the diverse public service needs of a campus library.

Knowledge of:
o library technical processes relating to the acquisition and classification of library materials
o library terminology and standard practices
o Library of Congress cataloging and filing systems.
o principles and techniques of supervision
o methods and practices of financial record keeping related to libraries

Ability to:

o perform sub professional library duties relating to technical processing and public services
o perform library clerical duties with speed and accuracy

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Employees must satisfy all pre-employment requirements to work for the District which include, but are not limited to, the following items:

REQUIRED FOR ALL EMPLOYEES

Tuberculosis Examination: Prior to employment, the successful candidate will be required to submit evidence (either skin test or X-ray report) of being free of tuberculosis within the past sixty (60) days. The TB test is a condition of employment and any expense must be borne by the successful candidate.

Fingerprinting Requirement:

As a condition of employment, all employees working for community colleges in the State of California are required to be fingerprinted within the first ten (10) working days of the date of employment pursuant to Education Code Section 88024. The District Office of Human Resources processes fingerprints electronically. During the employment intake process, new employees will be given information to have their fingerprints taken at another location.

Immigration Requirement: According to the Immigration Reform and Control Act, the Peralta Community College District is required to verify that all new employees are:

1) A citizen or national of the United States;

2) An alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States; or

3) An alien authorized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service to work in the United States.

All new employees are required to complete and sign a verification form and provide documentation attesting that he/she is a United States citizen, national, or an alien lawfully authorized to work in the United States.

District Policy: A Social Security Card will be required following selection and prior to completion of the hiring process. The employment process cannot be completed without a copy of the Social Security Card on file in the Office of Human Resources.
