Come join our Youth Department! We are seeking a part-time Public Services Associate. You will be part of a dynamic team providing programming and programming support, helping patrons of all ages find and select materials and assisting in collection maintenance. Our ideal candidate will enjoy youth and teen literature and working with children as part of a positive, hardworking and supportive staff.

Job Summary:

Responds to patron questions regarding library services and library materials in all formats in the assigned department. Assists with digital resources, programming, and maintaining the collection.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions:
  1. Provides patron assistance; monitors and provides guidance to patrons in the use of library facilities, services, and computer equipment. Instructs patrons on the use of computer-based library catalog and computer programs.
  2. Promotes and educates patrons on the use of online resources such as the library catalog and digital resources.
  3. Assists patrons using their personal devices using library materials.
  4. Responds to reference questions using all formats available and performs reader's advisory.
  5. Assists in the development of reader's advisory tools including booklists, bibliographies, and displays.
  6. Assists with collection maintenance including weeding and repairs.
  7. Assists in program planning, set-up, and delivery.
  8. Serves on library committees as assigned.
  9. Follows library safety and emergency procedures.
  10. Reports maintenance and safety issues to supervisor and/or Facilities personnel.
  11. Performs related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of library policies, practices, and procedures preferred.
  • Knowledge of reader's advisory and basic reference tools preferred.
  • Effective customer service and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English.
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs.
  • Competent in the use of Windows-based computer programs.
  • Ability to utilize reliable transportation to promptly report to job assignment and other locations, per job requirements.

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED required. Some college coursework or Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Two or more years work experience in a library or education environment preferred.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:
  • The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of libraries and offices, which includes the need for general safe workplace practices with office equipment and computers, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations.
  • The noise level in the work environment ranges from quiet to moderate.
  • Considerable mobility including, but not limited to, extensive periods of walking, bending, sitting, lifting weights up to 20 pounds, and pushing full book carts.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform general typing and computer skills.
  • Calm and focused handling of interruptions and distractions.
  • Periodic intense concentration and sustained viewing of a computer monitor.
  • Position requires working irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Occasional local travel by personal automobile may be required.

Supplemental Information

HOURS/SCHEDULE:

Every other weekend: Saturday 10-5 pm and Sunday 1-5 pm

Part-time Benefits:
The Library provides vacation and sick leave benefits as well as paid holidays for part-time staff.

All staff members are participants in the Ohio Public Employee Retirement System (OPERS). The Library contributes 14% of each staff member's salary to OPERS and each staff member contributes 10% (in lieu of a social security payroll deduction). Additionally, staff members can contribute to their retirement through the Ohio Public Employees Deferred Compensation Program.
