Appointment Type: This is a Temporary Exempt Category 17 position limited to no more than two (2) years in duration. Category 17 employees are used to backfill a Permanent Civil Service (PCS) employee on a leave of absence. This position is exempt from Civil Service and shall serve at the discretion of the Department Head.

Under general supervision, operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs a wide variety of pumping, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration and auxiliary plant machinery and equipment at Library locations, including the Main Library, 27 branch libraries, and two support buildings. Ensures that all equipment, machinery and systems are functioning normally and safely, and complies with all applicable safety rules and regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates, maintains and repairs a variety of pumping, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and power generating equipment to ensure the safe, correct and efficient functioning of the facility and equipment.
  • Conducts visual and audio inspection, tests, and monitors machinery and equipment, fire prevention life safety systems, electrical distribution systems, and emergency generators.
  • Makes entries and keeps records on shift operation. Takes, enters, and records gauge readings, temperatures on operating equipment; and enters data on log sheets.
  • Receives, records, and stores treatment chemicals safely and properly handles chemical spills.
  • Contacts and communicates with contractors, building tenants, and the public; maintains keys and accountability tracking communications equipment to ensure security.
  • As part of an emergency response team, recognizes, evaluates, and responds to potentially hazardous situations.

Desired Qualification(s):

  • Experience and technical knowledge of Building Mechanical systems, HVAC, plumbing, electrical and fire life safety systems.
  • Proficient in Computerized Maintenance Management Systems.
  • Experience with resolving mechanical issues and troubleshooting equipment failures.
  • Knowledge and implementation of safety protocols and procedures, OSHA guidelines and CA safety regulations.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, such as lifting heavy equipment and climbing ladders.
  • Customer service skills, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving skills.

Work Schedule: This position will begin with a Monday thru Friday 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. work schedule for initial training. Once training is complete, the normal work schedule may include weekend and evening hours; appointee must be willing to work this schedule.

How to qualify

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience: Four (4) years of verified journey-level stationary engineer experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of a variety of mechanical and electrical systems.

License and Certification:

Possession of a valid California Driver's LicenseAND a Universal Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) certificate issued by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.

Substitution:

  • Completion of a recognized four-year Stationary Engineer apprenticeship program
  • Graduation from a recognized four-year Maritime Academy with a degree in engineering or technology
  • Possession of at least a 3rd Assistant Marine Engineer's License of any (unrestricted) horsepower
