Position Overview
Salary Range: The current salary range for this position is $78,200-$123,400 (9-month academic year salary); however, off-scale salary and other components of pay, which would yield compensation that is higher than this range, are offered to meet competitive conditions.

Position Description
The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in premodern (pre-1910) Korean culture. The successful candidate will have a rigorous grounding in premodern Korean language (either vernacular Korean or literary Sinitic [Hanmun]) in addition to research expertise in one or more of the following: book history or print culture; popular culture; visual or material culture; theater and performance; or thought and religion. We are particularly interested in recruiting scholars with an interest in gender studies, women's literature, and feminist approaches.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications (required at time of application): PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in PhD or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application.
Additional Qualifications (required at time of start): Advanced training and competence in Korean Studies encompassing specializations in literature and literary studies, with the proven ability to conduct primary research using premodern Korean sources in either vernacular Korean or literary Sinitic (Hanmun). Evidence of scholarly impact and promise in research: innovative thinking and methodological rigor; likelihood of making original and significant contributions to the advancement of the field; ability to write clearly and argue cogently.
